Sampletank 2.2 on mac misses first note occasionally

Post by Pasha » Sat Jun 02, 2007 8:50 am

Hi

I use Sampletank 2.2 UB (AU) on Mac OS X Intel and Live 7.
the first note of the first bar occasionally is not played.
Does this happen with other Vsti as well?
I'm trying to determine where the problem is, as I remember 6.0.3 wasn't
showing this behaviour.

I use to have trouble with this and midi on Digital Performer when I used to use it till someone suggest that I put a blank bar at the start of my songs... I cant say I have had similar troubles with Live but I dont tend to use MIDI to play sampletank but prefer to record audio rather than MIDI

Thanks for reply!
Oops... I'm using a future version of Live because I own a self-built time machine...Live 6.0.7 of course!
I forgot to mention that this happens only in session view.

..A little OT, I see that you record audio directly. I always thought that this could shorten my workflow. Today I record MIDI then I freeze tracks (when I use multiple instances of ST) or record to audio using Live routings. It seems you record Audio on the fly. Aren't you missing Midi features like changing notes, midi parameters as a post record activity?
I'm curious about this and compare workflows helps learning.

I am going more to live instruments and have started to use a real bass
I find play VI's like Sampletank going straight to audio is slighly more natural sounding MIDI time has never been a thing of beauty but has always had slight lag problems like you are encountering. I do use midi at times but I like the more natural feel I get playing real time in audio. Of course if you want some stringent timing then midi or quantizing can help
Give it a go and remember that you can manipulate the audio in live and move a note around if you like some like Melodyne for this as you can adjust vocals and real instrumental audio

I played bass guitar many years ago and recently bought one. In a couple of weeks I've been able to keep up with a younger myself...Live Bass tracks now come to a new life, not only there's more groove than ever but the human feel is absolutely better than any quantize/humanize can do... even if sometime it sounds too humanized and I have to re record... ;-) I see you also own an X50, do you use it as a sound source? My wish is a self contained studio... I have an external MIDI module that I use at times, less and less because it has not multiple outputs and re erecording to audio 10 MIDI tracks it's time consuming. After what you told me I can try to record straight to Audio (while recording MIDI clips at the same time just for future reference) and I can use my beloved JV1010 too, thanks for suggestion. I always used to record MIDI before audio because I'm not as good to play keyboards as I play guitar & bass...but if I record tiny clips I can avoid errors...

I use to own a Yamaha Motif ES7 keyboard and it was an awesome keyboard and I do miss it but I had to buy something light and portable and at 4.5kg the Korg X50 did the trick Nice and easy to get a on a plan and still 5 octaves.. Yes I use it as a sound source Certain things always work and sound better in a "real" keyboard or a module. softsynths are great and I love sampletank for some things but dont use a huge amount. Depends on what sort of sounds you are after i suppose.

I'm still concerned about making the move to all software no hardware.
If on one side all software means that all sounds are generated internally
and thus should result in a pure sound, Sampletank sometimes lacks warmness even if I consider it the best all purpose virtual synth around. ;-) My JV1010 sounds are ein pair with ST but JV1010 multitimbral mode is cumbersome when you want to modify effects in real time. You need to send SysHex instead of MIDI CC, so this makes using JV1010 a little messy and Live does not send Syshex AFAIK.
By recording like you do I can spend less time on programming my JV1010 and more on making music. For the music I make MIDI timing kills the groove a little so I'll try as you do, but retaining MIDI clips so I know what I have played...
Do you use Sampletank as a Drum as well or you use impulse?

Stylus RMX for some drums though I am more and more leaning towards EZDrummer all the time. RMX is great but as I more program my own drums .. they really are 2 totaly different systems and therefore fit in different places

It seems to be random. I haven't found a way to reproduce 100% of times.
Is that happening to you as well?
