MOTU ULTRALITE ROUTING WOES

I'm running Ableton 6.03, on an XP machine, with the Ultralite.

Has anyone experianced this problem? When I select the outputs for a Clip.... I select 1/2 and the Clip will not play. BUT if I select 3/4 the clip DOES play, but on the face of the Ultralite the green output meter is moving up and down but on 1/2 (it's confused).
WTF!!! I called MOTU today and they said it's a normal. NORMAL??!?
Furthermore, if I select the outputs for the next Clip on outputs 5/6, it now shows the meters dancing on the front face of the Ultralite on 3/4. It's like every set of stereos have shifted up one pair, but ads more to the confusion when it's outputing in correctly on the face of the Ultralite.

So it's like this:

Ableton reflects: 1/2

Ultralite: No sound and no display.

Ableton reflects: 3/4

Ultralite: Sound, but the display is dancing on 1/2.

Ableton reflects: 5/6

Ultralite: Sound on 3/4 and shows 3/4 on display.

WHATS wrong? I can't get it to act right.

Any hints?

I think if you do a search, you'll find this issue has come up before. It certainly p*ssed off a mate...

Sadly there's no fix for this, basically Live is offsetting the main outs to be 1/2...

So as you say, 1/2 in Live is the main outs on the MOTU, 3/4 in Live is 1/2 on the MOTU... you might wanna put a wee sticker somewhere on your MOTU

I just picked up the motu ultra lit except I am getting now sound through any of the monitors and no readings from the front panel of the motu.

I am using xp also and I believe I installed all the drivers correctly.

I am going to call motu and see what they think and will inform u of any insight

Do not have the interface here now, but:

Ultralite has a stereo output "MAIN". This is out 1/2
The individual outs 1..8 need to be addressed with other channel ids, so they are
3,4,5,6,7,8,9,10 for the analog outs and 11,12 for the SPDIF out.

this means:

1 = Left Main
2 = Right Main
3 = Individual Out 1
4 = Individual Out 2
etc...

You can control levels of all those outputs with the volumne knob on the front of the interface, but function depends on the settings.
Settings can be adjusted comfortably with that Motu setup software provided with the driver download.

this is nothing Live does, this is what the driver has to do. We just get a list of channels, thats all. We do not know what channel 6 means for the soundcard.

Hey Robert

I wasn't being critical or placing blame with Ableton, and as you point out, 'offsetting' was the wrong word to use in explaining how the MOTU works with Live (and other apps too!)

Personally I think MOTU made a mistake in not numbering the Main Outs as 1/2 in the first place...

Yes, 11/12 will give you what you want, that has been a speed bump for pretty every new Ultralight user that's posted here, it seem. Because of this, I believe that at this point MOTU's latest CueMix has altered the routed so that you don't need to specify 11/12 anymore.

The latest firmware/software: 1.1.5 is firmware and 3.6.7.4 is software (drivers and cuemix), you need to register your product on their site in order to do downloads.

You aren't losing a set of outs, it's simply that you need to take care how you address them, as Robert's post shows.

I don't see what the big issue is, once you understand what's going on it really is no big deal.

1-2 = main outs
3-10 = analog outs
11-12 = SPDIF
13-14 = Phones

sorry, the shit stir part was a little over... ...uhm... ...shit stirry. Blame the heat and food.

But still, it sure is odd and a little confusing how the ultralite's I/O is addressed, or better said, how it's laid out in the back panel of the interface (main outs right beside ins and analog outs in a row above = wtf). I guess that's what happens when you cram all that stuff in a half rack space.

You just need some time to get used to it.

It changed with a revision of the MOTU software, also. It used to be I needed to set my outs to 11/12, now I do not. Also, the firmware update seems to make a real difference.

I keep a list on my desktop that spells it out so I don't have to "think" if my soundcard crashes in the heat of the moment ( it used to crash alot, but not anymore).
