Powerbook G4 RAM...how much does everybody have?

Post by Landdogger » Tue Jun 12, 2007 4:56 pm

I'm just curious what kind of RAM Live users on Powerbook G4's are using. I'm considering upgrading to 1.5GB or 2GB in the near future.

THANKS!

512!

and it runs like snail injected with horse tranquilizers. i use my PB for graphics work mostly, but I play with Live on it. it's really limited.

my dual 1.8 G5 has 2.5 gigs though. Live likes that a lot better.

2gb on a MBP it's flying.

uppps.... sorry the question was Powerbook... 1 to 2 gb is a healthy amount, however.

amen to that. I recently upgraded to 2 gb ram - and not much speed improvement. I second the previous advice - invest in a Mac Book Pro...

i have 1.5 gig in my g4 but seriously......I just picked up Macbook 2.16 with just the 1 gig ram and it's like night and day....i loaded a set that was maxing out on the powerbook and it hits about 18% on the macbook....the speed bump is a joke and so worth it if you can afford it....like people have said before save the money on ram for the powerbook and try for the macbook.
macbook 2.16 ghz, live 6...studio with gear now gathering dust.

I have 1GB in my Powerbook G4. On most of my sets my computer is struggling.
But the answer is not more RAM. The real answer is a better computer.
Something with a dualcore processor perhaps. If only....

Sell your Powerbook and get a Macbook. I think it would be much faster.

1.5 ghz on my 12"pbook. gets the job done mostly.

there's always something shinier and faster..

(but if i had an extra 2 grand lying around it might be a different story. until then.. )

1.25Gb on my 12" G4, which is the maximum amount allowed (stupid apple soldered the 256Mb chip to the motherboard, unfortunately). The thing runs like a charm, and although it's not as fast as my macbook which I use for work, it's plenty fast to write music with, and it's actually a dedicated music machine.

Unfortunately, the G4 isn't going to be getting any faster, so I'd encourage maxing out your RAM while the prices are still in the "pretty cheap" range... before they hit "collector's item". ;)

I recently upgraded from 756MB to 1.5G - I noticed a modest performance boost, but nothing that enabled me to work faster.

what i always think about is how amazing Live 3 ran on a G4. why is it that software gets LESS efficient with updates? i understand more features blah, blah but just playing back straight audio clips is painful. 3/4 years ago i could load up a shitload of tracks and effects in Live without choking. MIDI ruined Live, i'm going back to version 3. :)
