So I'm finally ready to spend $1000+ on a pair of monitors..

Anyways... the BM6A's are here. And all i have to say is ...

GODDAMN! 8O :o

Speechless. Utterly speechless. I think I just had an orgasm
LOL!!! that's awesome aqua! just don't orgasm on the monitors themselves...it might void the warranty! 8O

I tell ya....this is one of the most exciting threads I've ever been in as it's so refreshing to see someone as excited as you after a big purchase like that. I'm cracking up!!

on the A7's....i've called Guitar Center and looks like the "pro dept" has them and the manager quoted me a deal I can't refuse with MoPads + XLR cables....so I'm about 40 mins away from getting my ass over there. Hopefully they'll have the BM's there as well and if so....I'll be sure to take a hard look at them before I break out the cash for the A7's.

Anyway, aqua.....that's great and keep us posted!! (and likewise)

speak of the devil ! I was about to leave and just got the mail for the day and lo & behold there's a letter from Guitar Center CEO - since I'm a "good customer" they're giving me 10% off on any purchases between now and June 30th and just have to bring this letter in! ha! ha!....

MAN....what a day...what a day...

I hope they have the BM6A's there....I'm having 2nd thoughts now!!

Woodie, I have enough time, pro assistance, perfect room and nearly all the top monitors to try with my own notebook, Live sets
I bought Genelec set for few reasons, most of studios I work, nearly all use Genelecs, so I keep being used to similar sound, I wanted 2+ subwoofer set, wanted that they double as my portable ones on tour and on longer out of station assignments.
However there were speakers there that I liked more, absolutely stunning- Adams

yeah...for some reason about 2 months ago I was dead set on the Genelecs and then things got busy at work, had to travel, etc....and I put the whole search off.....UNTIL NOW!!! and to that I have to thank aqua_tek!

well...I didn't see your post before I left, but you must've been talking to me thru the airwaves as I now have a pair of Adam A7's sitting right next to me at home!!! yahoo! :D

unfortunately they didn't have the A7's out in the listening room (they did have a buttload of Genelecs, passive Adams, KRK, etc.., but the A7's were only in the back in boxes, but I had a chance to listen to the Dyna BM5A's and a couple of BlueSky's while waiting on the guys.....and sure enough the BM5A's sounded real nice. They had 6's as well....but also in boxes, but when he took out one of the A7's out of the box for me to look at - that was it I had to have them. they're gorgeous!!

anyway....will be setting them up here in a little while and will report back on a test run, but I have a feeling these were meant for me - let's just hope they sound as good as they look, but all indications are (including your comment now rikhyray) - that I'll be glad I went for these. If for some reason I'm just not feeling them....GC has a 30-day return policy, so I ain't worried. ;)

WHEW!! busy day today as well there.....you know it's already summer when the kids are swarming Guitar Center early afternoon on a weekday!

aqua_tek - ain't no lie - you is havin' some fun! feels good, doesn't it!??

that reminds me - we had chinese food tonight and my fortune cookie said "today you will start a new love affair". I looked at my wife and she said...."yea.....with your monitors!" hehe....I think that should have been Aqua's as well!!

before I tested the ADAMS, I had to have one last listen to the JBL Garage Sale speakers....(violins please)...

with the help of my little girl....we busted the boxes open, got the mopads and XLR cables from the bag and 10 mins later I'm looking at her asking...."are you ready darlin'??". and then....the Heaven's opened up. I now know the feeling Aqua! It was truly magical....I went crazy thru my collection just listening with my mouth wide opened and hearing things I never heard before.....it was cool. ;) Def Leppard...Ozzy....Judas Priest....John Cougar....Boston.....Tom Petty....even Ozone - "Dragostea Din Ti" ! (my kids love that tune)....and of course my eldest is diggin' The Romantics - "What I Like About You" right now (all time great rockin' tune).

Anyway....as a first time buyer of serious monitors (and hopefully the last time!) and at first listen - I'm really digging these puppies. I think I now I understand the meaning of "flat"! While there's not a whole lotta bottom, it's just right with the mids and highs....it truly sounds well balanced and crystal clear.....not "coloring" and after listening to various tunes one right after the other for a good 1/2 hour - my ears were still alive and I didn't want to get up. It was weird....

I don't know.....that fortune cookie may be right - I can't stop thinking and looking at them and it's driving me crazy as the family is in bed and I want to rock out. Ahhhh!!! 8O

I'm nearly sold. Are they flexible enough to play at quiet levels (speaking voice levels) as well as shouting levels?? Some monitors I've checked out lack dynamics at the volume knob, IOW they can't be chilled out late at night.

Also, what size rooms are you set up in? My room's small, 7'x10'.

Reviews I've googled have all been favorable.

..and oh another thing - these motherfu$@#%ers are GODDAMN LOUD!

I've got these getting pumped via a Mackie 1202 VLZ-PRO Mixer and when I had the input volume on 0 on both monitors....I barely adjusted the volume on the mixer and it was already too loud - I mean absolutely no room to fine-tune the volume.

OK....so to get it back to 0 on the mixer volume knob to allow more control over the volume...I had to turn the A7's down to like -30db so I wouldn't accidentally blow my kids out of the room! I mean shit...that's like 3 clicks from being all the way to the left on the front monitor volume knob! DAMN........I can't wait 'til the family is out of the house - I'm afraid someone this weekend is going to end up calling the cops on me. 8)

I really forgot how loud 50 watts is (I have an ole Peavey Backstage Plus guitar amp and it's also 50 watts). Insanely loud for a home studio as small as mine, but I love it. ;)

hey Tone....just saw your post after posting mine.

OK - that's an interesting question because the volume knobs on the front are CLICK levels and I notice that going from all the way down which is less than -30db - the next click up was significantly louder. The volume knobs on the monitors are NOT supposed to be used as a "main volume knob" - you really need another source to control the volume of both monitors at once. As I mentioned in my post....I have a Mackie Mixer that saved me there as without it - I'd be screwed, blued & tattooed. ;)

How I have it set up is from the soundcard to the mixer...and then the mixer to the boxes via XLR. I wanted to have the volume on the mixer at CENTER so to give me more control over the volume (more fine-tuning)...and that's when to have it CENTER on the mixer, my optimum level I found was around -30db. it's crazy i know! that's probably a damn good indication that the monitors are probably way too much than I need, but I don't care....I am really digging them. I'll probably crank them up some more, but it'll drop the ability to fine-tune it from the mixer some. I'll have to do some more playing around manana, but I would say that if you don't have a mixer, but another choice of a main volume control - to make sure it gives you that wide range of volume control.

I will say this, though....if you're going to use them directly to adjust the volume - these are NOT your monitors. You should really have a mixer or volume control in between and "set & forget" the front knobs. They're click knobs, not smooth knobs for fine-tuning, so that's another minus if you're going direct. At the same time...why would you want to do that anyway since you'd have to adjust 2 knobs (each monitor as a volume knob)!

And YEAH...my room is smallish as well....like 8' x 15'.

i have the mackie hr824 (mk1 aka originals). two pairs actually. bought them about 6 months ago.. they changed my music production for the better. i had event ps6 + s250 15" sub combo before and my music didnt translate, came out muffled.

now with the mackies my music translates perfect to car and club and even laptop speakers! bass, mids and highs! i haven't treated my room at all.. sometimes to get a better feel for bass i have to sit back a bit but thats just to check the overall roundness of the bass.. i wonder if it has to do with not treating my room or just simple physics of low frequencies needing more distance to develop.

i listened to the event asp8s at guitar center and they weren't as clean as the mackies and didnt have enough 250-300hz range and had too much bass and they were muddy

oh also the mackies are not fatiguing at all, unless you're listening to overcompressed music!! and another thing, if a song has too much highs, mids or bass its very easy to tell on the speakers, rather than other speakers making everything sound good.

these speakers are so worth the money, im a huge fan now! oh and one other thing - two big mixing engineers for dance music that i know trust the mackies too! (medway aka jesse skeens (hooj choons) and christian dwiggins (engineroom studios / moonshine records)

i've never heard the adams or dynaudios though.. but i do mostly electronic music and bass is extremely important so the 8inch woofer on the mackies really helps since it goes down to 37".. they bump big time!

overall though, if you know how your monitors reproduce sound you can make it sound good.. just listen to professional music on them and then mimic the results in your songs. however if your speakers dont have much bass, it might not be as much fun to listen to as you mix / produce.. (might not have the right vibe!)

that's cool, zstowasser....glad to hear you're happy with the Mackies! The HR824 sure has been around a long time and definitely a leader, if not THE leader, in the monitor industry. Problem for me on those - they're way too big!! I saw a couple of used ones up for sale on Craigslist at one point, but I couldn't draw myself to get them since I just don't have the space....even 2" width wise is already too much, so for me the Adam's although bigger than what I was looking for....are borderline, but they work in the space I've got available.

When I mentioned about not having that bottom....I meant it doesn't have that bass thumpin' like rap music in cars that you can hear them coming down the street; if you're going that low, you probably are a good candidate for a sub. Lows ARE important to me, so that was the first thing I zeroed in on as I do some hard rock (heavy riffs), but yet I do electronic like you, but I'm not writing music for clubs either....and I do alot of acoustic (6 string & 12 string), so really....I was looking for something with an all around good range with good imaging, but at the same time....I was never able to hear them in the shop or do any kind of A/B comparison. The shops around here, including Guitar Center, just don't have their act together when it comes down to auditioning monitors - that's one thing I'm really disappointed about since they're one of the tools for musicians/studios that costs the most money.

Anyhow....funny you mentioned about the Bass and how it gets deeper while you move back. When I stepped back about 10,11,12 feet from the monitors - I noticed the same thing!!! The bass was actually deeper back there than sitting 1.1/2 - 2 feet away from them. If someone can shed some light on this...that'll be great. My room is really not acoustically fit either, but I'm nearly wall-to-wall here with business files, so I'm probably "ok", but there are 3 filter knobs on the back to fine-tune, so I still have that to look forward to and how they affect the sound.

For those of you following this thread and interested in the Adams - go read the Magazine reviews they have made available on their website. I just read Craig Anderton's review this morning on the A7's in EQ Magazine - and what he said is pretty much how I feel about these - and he's the expert here, not me!

Here's the link to their magazine review page, scroll down to the A7 section and pull up the EQ Mag English Review:

http://www.adam-audio.com/downloads/magazine.htm

Another thing they say that might not give the "first week listen" justice is that everyone say before they reach optimum level...you need to give it time to "break in"; I guess I attribute this thought to the same thing as curing/breaking in a grill = a new grill doesn't cook like a used one! As well....to power up the monitors for a bit before working on them so the power supply and components are warmed up and ready to go.

Bass has a longer wavelength than higher frequencies. 50Hz frequency = 22foot wavelength
http://www.sengpielaudio.com/calculator-wavelength.htm

It's exactly like waves in the ocean, if you can picture waves that are 1 inch apart (13.5kHz) bouncing around your room the spots where they crash together and make larger waves (likewise they combine and make larger troughs or just cancel each other out) are close together. Now picture waves at 50Hz, the wave length (distance from on crest of a wave to the next crest) is 22 feet, the areas where they crash together are much much further apart. Where the wave crests combine the bass is loud, where the wave troughs combine they cancel out.

Dealing with all that is an art. People drag audio spectrometers around a studio to identify hot and cold spots in a room than apply acoustic treatments accordingly. This is why a non-symmetrical room is ideal because it prevents the waves from consistently being in the same spot, they bounce around more.

hope that makes sense.

Good info on the loudness. I live in apartments and I prefer to make noize without feeling like people can hear me very much. I'll listen to the same kick line all afternoon, that would drive people nuts. There's something about playing NICE speakers at level 3 when they're designed to go to 11, but that comes from guitar amp experience which is a different beast.

I route my gear through an Edirol UA101 USB sound card and have used its volume level to feed my monitors which are left in the middle of their range, I get what you mean, very handy.

Really I'm just looking for some WOW in the speakers, my monitors (Event PS6) were the second piece of gear I ever bought, time to upgrade, no doubt. I want to be WOWed, they stopped doing that years ago plus they put the ass in bass.

Tone Deft - great link! del.icio.us'ized! ;)

but yeah....the frequency wavelengths makes damn good sense, though - I didn't even think of it that way. So in essence....when mixing, it's probably always good to stand back 10 ft. or so to really hear the bass frequencies in the mix compared to 2 feet away...and if you're REALLY concerned - then go to the next room and listen for the bass. ;)

One perfect example of a "test song" I was listening to that really showed the bass flexibility of the monitors is: Lenny Kravitz - Always On The Run. The bass is fairly deep and sharp, clear guitars/horns for the mids and cymbals for the highs.......and it sounded AWESOME - very clear and I didn't feel like it was lacking in any dept. although some may feel the highs are too much, but your excellent explanation of the wavelength/frequencies explains why that is. On that note, though....I haven't fiddled with the frequency/EQ knobs on the back yet. I'm no in rush....they sound great as is.

yeah...these are way more powerful than what I need for sure, but heck....at least I have all the headroom in the world to piss off the neighbors and eventually the wife whom I'm sure will get sick of the monitors in due time; This was a Father's Day gift...although "daddy" when out and bought them himself - just an excuse to finally get off my ass and just do it. ;)

It's always good for most machinery, even industrial equipment, to get more than you need so the unit doesn't work as hard and lasts alot longer. So yeah....I totally agree with the same concept for monitors.

Don't disparage though...if you plow for a pair of monitors and can afford at least to pay $1,000 for them - then order a pair from Guitar Center or an online outlet that will give you 30 days trial and can return them. At least you'll feel comfortable enough to try them out and if you're not happy - return them and go to the next one on the list! I just gave up on the auditoning as the setups at GC is just a sad, sad case and no one really there to help.

[EDIT: I mentioned the wrong Lenny song! corrected....]
