Younger Brother...the next Pink Floyd?!

Post by digitalex » Mon Jun 18, 2007 12:20 am

Anyone fans of this band? Simon Posford from Shpongle, Benji Vaughan (who produced the Egg) and the Bays. They'll be in Future Music in two months...

Weird. I just found out Shpongle and Hallucinogen are doing a live show in San Francisco next weekend (Shpongle is a DJ set).

Younger Brother is playing. I've never heard of them before. I'm going!

I like their name. Have you seen that amazing documentary about a South American indigineous tribe? They refer to Western man as the Younger Brother. it's very prophetic, very cool.

Yeah, all of Twisted Records crew is awesome!
I highly recommend Hallucinogen, Younger Brother, Shpongle, and Ott. Tristan, Prometheus (Benji Vaughn), Koxbox are all awesome sick psytrance.

Interestingly, Simon Posford lists Pink Floyd as a major influence - and sometimes remixes "On the Run" live. Simon worked in Butterfly studios with Alex Patterson and Youth before branching into his own genius music....you can def hear the Orb influence on Shpongle/Younger Brother.

They've gotta cool sound but they were playing to a studio track. Vocals too.

cool track, but i don't think the music is live...which would make
that clip pretty weak imo...
sure didn't sync up with the performance alot.
i'd like to see/hear it live.
pink floyd?
not even close...

actually the show was totally live...it was the Bays and Posford on instruments and Benji running loops off Live... anyways, it's not floyd, but the spirit is definitely there...besides, for those that don't know, posford's been one of the most well respected electronic music producers of the last ten years...basically founded psytrance, and shpongle, well, there's just no words...

So many bands now claim to have been influenced by Pink Floyd or The Beatles that it almost kind of devalues the monumentous efforts these bands went to to produce records. Its also almost sacraligeous (sp) NOT to cite them as influences. Which is a shame. A band/artist should set their own yardsticks rather than compare themselves to others.

My 2p obviously.

Listenig to the youtube link now. :D
cool track, but i don't think the music is live
Thats a typical youtube syncing error.

Dammit, they have been pushing back the release of the new album for over a year!!!!! It was supposed to be released today, and I was planning on playing some tracks for an upcoming party - but it's been pushed back to Sept 03!!!! Grrrr.....

Ok, now I'm pissed. I'll say this about Younger Brother, Shpongle, et al....they make awesome music, no doubt. But as far as being on the kind of level Pink Floyd was on....I think Younger Brother et al are too consumed with psychedelia for the sake of psychedelia to be close to Pink Floyd. Sure PF's early stuff was just plain weird for weird's sake, but the PF I love the most seems like the psychedelia is secondary to really really really good songs that are psychedelic because they express deep insight into what it means to be human, not because of weird sounds in the mix.

ethios, that's a bit premature to say...the album isn't even out yet! personally, i think the floyd influence is unmistakable and there's really nothing out there like it now...but then again i was at the show where they played the album live. someone mentioned tool/perfect circle..that's more psychedelic prog rock, nothing like these guys..funny, cause i always thought a collab between the two would be great.

I was referring to previous Twisted Records work. Don't get me wrong...Twisted is probably my favorite label...just sometimes I wish psychedelic artists would lay off the Terrence McKenna samples (Shpongle) and trying to be so psychedelic. Just a stylistsic difference I was spouting cuz I'm pissed cuz I want that album so bad!!!

Here's their rehearsals for "All I Want"....

...that's the song I'm dying to play...it's good!!
