Audio clip cropping previous audio clip

I want to layer 2 samples ontop of each other, without the first sample being cropped to where the 2nd one begins. I've searched the manual high and low but with no luck.

Am I restricted to doing this via 4 separate tracks?

I don't know about the 4 tracks part, but yes - that is how it is supposed to work.

Live does not allow more than one clip to play simultaneously on a single track.

You would not be the first person to wish for this

you could drop the sample into a Simpler ... you could play 20 of the same sample at the same time. Or put 20 simplers in racks and play 20 different samples.
it depends what you want to do with the sample.
