Djing with live - a few little problems....

Post by jrd » Wed Jun 20, 2007 3:00 pm

Hi everyone, I've figured out the basics of how to dj using live...

The only problem is that it always sounds like the beatmatching is just out. I know this is bound to happen as you can't tell the exact peak of the kick just by looking at the wave form... how can you nudge a track slightly to fix this?? Or is this due to how the tracks are warped? I know about the nudge buttons in the warp section, but the smallest nudge is 1/32 which is pretty big when it comes to beat matching.

Another thing... I'll be in the middle of recording, and I'll look at the recording view and sometimes see that the track thats playing has actually stopped recording even though the main record button is still activated.

Hope someone can help :)

You just need to spend more time warping the tracks, and being consistant where you place the warp markers. Click the link in my signature to get all your DJing with Live questions answered :)

I'll try playing around with the warp markers then!!

Any idea why it sometimes stops recording tracks?

Try warping with your ears, and not your eyes.

It's irrelevant what the waveform looks like... it just needs to sound right!

for slight nudging you can use the track delay as well

Yeah, the warping a track thread is in the little list of tips and tricks sticky. It's pretty good.

Test out your warping against midi clips on the impulse drum machine. Preset clips are fine. Try one with a clear kick on every beat. And other simple ones with snares on beats 2 and 4 and maybe some hihat.

This gives you a good starting reference for your warping.

You should be able to leave this clip playing through the whole track without slipping. It's not enough for it to just be right at the beginning, like using decks, as live syncs to the master clock, not the outgoing record

Go with your ears.

You shouldn't need to use the nudge if all is correct, unless you want to add a bit of groove to the mix by bringing hi hats forwad or something. Turning off launch quantisation should allow finer nudging.

Sorted it out now... it was my first attempt so was just getting used to everything!!

The problem was I was assuming the warping was correct to the end of every track... with some of them the warp markers were a bit out towards the end!!

Thanks :)
