Live 6 troubleshooting, please help me!

Hi!

I'm having some problems running Ableton Live 6 on my pc. I made a few samples last week and saved them in a project but when I load that project now my pc is having enormous difficulties playing those samples.

The pc-usage meter on the top right corner jumps from 1% to 300% when I try to play a simple drum loop and a bass loop. The software almost crashes and the samples sometimes just make an awful crack sound, upsetting my speakers.

I have an AMD Athlon 2800+, with 1 Gig RAM, which isn't great but I haven't had problems with musicsoftware in the past (I've tried several demos: Cubase, Reason, FL Studio, Live 4). I still have sufficient disk space and my pc is in optimal condition.

What could be the problem here? I really want to continue making music on this pc until I can afford a notebook.
