Sync problem with OS X and Midiman

Post by WaTTz » Fri Aug 16, 2002 5:20 am

For some reason, whenever I try to sync an EXT midi sync to Live via my Midisport 2x2 the bpms are totally off on Live. It start and stops on the dime but Live laggs by 30 bpms or so. Say if I have a sequencer playing at 125 bpms, Live bpms would count at 98 bpm. That is seriously messed :( On OS 9.2, Live syncs fine but not in OS X.

I tried asking Midiman tech support and they don't know diddly. Anyone else having the same problem?

thanx

Wow, I have the exact same problem on my 667 and was just about to post it. I was wondering if it was a midiman osx driver problem. If such is the case, we can use the 2x2 elsewhere in our setup, and I was thinking about getting a Quattro, or could anyone recommend a different reliable osx midi interface?

I even called Midiman tech support and they have no clue. They said they would let me know. In any case Midiman is the U.S. distributor for Live and Reason so they should be concerned about this issue.

On Reason 2 I got ext sync working so I'm pretty sure it's an Ableton problem. Anyone else using Live with OS X and a Midisport 2x2?

I am having OSX MIDIsport sync problems too...

As far as I can tell MIDI syncing multiple devices using Live and a MIDIsport 2x2 doesn't work under OS X. I am having similar syncing problems, like the poster WaTTz is having: I am trying to sync 2 Powerbooks, both running OS 10.2 and Live 1.5.2, both using MIDIsport 2x2 interfaces *with the latsest drivers*, with no luck. Just like in WaTTz's case, the slave computer runs about 25-30 BPMs behind the master computer. With master and slave set to 133, I hit the EXT button on the slave and play on the master, and both play, but the slave immediately drops to 99-102 BPM (it actually fluctuates). Furthermore, while the 'S' light on the slave indicating sync pulses to the tempo of the master, the 2 computers are certainly not in sync. I quick 4/4 bass drum loop reveals this very clearly.

The odd part is that I can get the 2 computers to sync pretty much dead on, including tempo changes, when using OS 9 on both the machines. This is frustrating because I wanted to use OS X for its stability; it hasn't crashed once on me, while the OS 9 version of Live quits out all too often.

So is this a MIDIman issue, or an Abelton one? It would be nice to hear from a technically adept person from either of these companies who could shed some light on this...

Ok.. After wasting a lot of time on testing, I just came to a conclusion that it is not a Midiman issue and it's an Ableton issue.

For one thing I also have a G4 Cube and there are no sync problems with OS 10.2 and Live 1.5.2. However, on my TiBook 800 the problem persists with the sync being offset by about 30 bpm.

In addition, I tested another midi interface, Emagic MT4 with OS 10.2 and the Midisport 2x2 with my TiBook 800 and I still get the same sync issue. For some reason Live won't sync properly on Powerbook G4's and any midi I/O's using OS X.

Could someone at Ableton acknowledge that this is an issue?

Thanks,
J

I will hopefully conduct my own Jaguar test tonight on my retarded 667, but, looks futile! OSX is so much ass pain, but I can't turn it off!

Is anyone out there syncing a tibook w/OSX? Please detail your setup!

Not just Midiman....

My friend and I have this issue too. We're using 2 Ti books OS 10.2.1, one first gen 400 mhz and the other 3rd gen 667. Thing is we're using the MOTU MIDI Express XT(b3 driver) and an Emagic AMT8. I've also tried my MOTU FastLane USB, Same issue... So I think we can safely say it's not MidiMan. I can also confirm that Reason runs & syncs fine. We've tried syncing off external sources and using one TiBook as master and the other slave, Any config doesn't work... It's a..... bummer. I really hope this get fixed in the next release.

How about...

How about Changing your Startup Disk to OS 9? I mean, I know it seems a waste to even have OS X if that is a fix but I have found I'd rather have things up and running than not- at least until @$%#$# OS X gets up to speed....

Can ableton please confirm that the latency compensation bug in OS X LIVE has been fixed please?

Can anyone else confirm that they get the same problem, basically that the latency compensation field in the audio preferences doesn't do anything? This means that audio recorded is always displayed, and plays back with latency matching that of the audio engine thereabouts.

A simple test is to re-record audio out of the mac back into it as a new clip (be sure to turn off monitoring!)

the new clip should play back in time, but instead the new audio recorded has a latency.

Altivec performance aside, will I have to buy an update to have this major problem (as far as i can see) fixed?

Thankyou guys for all your hard work, I'm sure it will all pay off so all bugs will be ironed out after release before your xmas break!

550 TiBook-Quattro- OS 10.2 - Live 1.5.2-Reason-Elektron machinedrum...

yes, latency when using the Quattro and Live....and holy christ have I had a time of it tryin to get everything running smoothly again after doing a fresh install of jaguar last night...

I use Peak, but I had a Spark ME on my drive, never really used, and that was a huge pain after moving to 10.2 and Live 1.5.2....till I realized and got rid

I upgraded from 10.1.2 and 1.5.1 at the same time, so I don't know which is most screwy... but things are just such a pain now

Live and Reason alone, no issues, except massive monitor lag....
