Transfering Hard Drives ?

Post by wildcon » Thu Jun 28, 2007 12:21 pm

Hi,

I'm getting ridiculously short on space on my 60gig hard drive (laptop).

I've been told that I can do a straight transfer from the drive to a larger one (100 gig) and transfer all the settings with it. I've no idea what the software is that does this ?

However - even if I can do it, will I have to re-register all my soft synths / Live / Cubase etc because I.m on another drive or will the ID also be transfered ??

Any advice appreciated.

Cheers

Not sure about the transfer process but I would recommend you install a drive that is larger than 100 GIGs if you are already pushing your 60. At first you will feel all this freedom of having space but within a couple months you'll be pushing 100 to the limit if you are doing anything with music or video.

Hi,

Is it's possible to get a 7200rpm drive that's larger than 100 gig?

Cheers

yep, good advice on getting a larger drive. i just bought a 500gig 7200rpm drive.

you can use software like paragons exact image or nortons ghost to take an exact copy of your drive and then put that image onto your new drive and continue working without having to reinstall.

even better, could you possibly leave your 60g drive and install a second HD? that way you dont have to worry about transferring your programs over

Do you want to transfer your stuff to a new internal notebook harddrive? Or do you simply need more space? I use a 400 GB eSATA drive on my macbook pro with an express/34 eSATA interface card, which works like a dream and is miles faster than the internal drive. I also use the drive with both my macbook and my PC, using mediafour MacDrive on the PC which enables me to read and write HFS+ formatted drives.

so long

Is your drive partitioned or you have windows + data on the same partition.

If so, it could be a great idea to build a OS only partition by the same time you change your hd.

To transfer your stuff, just unhide system files in the folder options and copy your document and settings, your windows folder and your files like boot.ini and ntdlr in the disk root. You can bring program file too.

It will work. You must have a backup btw

Hi,

I just need a larger drive for the notebook.

I have Carillon 300gig external drive which is great, but i do so much stuff on the go that I would like to transfer some of my sample libraries such as Battery etc onto the laptop.

I DJ with the laptop and Live and also like to keep a fair few tracks on there as well.

I actually have Ghost for Backup so I'll check that out didn't realise you could do a complete transfer.

Does that transfer the code that gets picked up by the soft synths and Live etc. I really don't want to have to re register everything.

Thanks so much for the advice.

ACRONIS TRUE IMAGE...Great program for what you want..Does a 1 to 1 Image.
I use it to backup all my drives in my Audio PC..The backups then get put away in a draw any from the PC.
You will have to connect the other Drive Via USB to your laptop though
