Yes we do at times... I see that shithead John Howard has now declared alcohol and pornograpghy of limits to aboriginals in the Northern Territory due to increase sexual abuse amongst aboriginals... WTF if there is an issue then resolve it but don't single out a race and ban them from vices allowed to others... Sure booze and some porn can be detrimental but I don't see him banning it to the Greeks, Italians, Chinese...

As an Australian citizen and having lived and visited there since the 80's it seems to me that Australia is slipping and becoming more like the old South Africa... Racism seems to be getting more rampant... The one thing I remember from my last visit in 2001 was a Norweigian freighter that rescued some boat people and wanted to drop them off in Aus... Well John Howard's response was to send the navy to the freighter and say "Not here mate"... I mean what is the captain to do? Say "OK boat people no one wants ya so back into the sea you go." My wife and I were appalled as we watched this on the news over the course of several days it made me ashamed to be an Australian...

This is why Canada is a great place to live very multicultural and respectful of people's race and views... The one thing that is somewhat disappointing is that the government is slow to recognize immigrants credential and degrees for employment... This is too bad since we are suffering for skilled labour and healthcare employment positions which some immigrants are more than able to fill...

Hey Brian, there's a few things to consider;

Were these people criminals fleeing legitimate authority in their home countries? Were they infected with some disease that could cause extreme environmental damage to Australia?

It's perfectly legitimate to control who enters and leaves your country. As for the Captain, if he's picked up marooned / shipwrecked souls, then he's responsible to return them to their HOME port, or to transfer them to a ship bound for their HOME port. That's the international law of the sea. To take them to another destination is called either "kidnapping", "Human trafficking", depending on whether they're willing or not.

Were these people actually at sea? Is it possible that they engaged the ship to bring them into the country? Without more info, I'm still on Howard's side on this one.

Personally, I've thought of moving to Australia more than once (I'm probably more culturally similar to Aussies than the average Ontarian / Québecois), but I'm pretty rooted here in Central Canada, and will be for the foreseeable future...
