Loads of unfinished ideas?

Post by benlowther » Wed Jul 04, 2007 3:01 pm

I've got an idea...if your like me, you have loads of unfinished tunes lying around. I make mainly 4/4 electro tunes, and regularly start things, get a nice loop going and never finish it.

What I was thinking was, we post up our unfinished ideas for others to listen to, then if someone likes the sound of it and thinks they can add to it/do a better job we could send the parts across and do a little online project.

What do ya think?

That's a good idea.
But don't you worry about if some one steal you music and presented as his music?

Very good point. But at least it will a claim to fame if it does well :)

But I'm sure it's worth a go just to see how it goes.

Think I'll start by uploading a track later to start us off.

Thats a good idea, i have loads of unfinished tracks, and many more reason files with two or three patterns on different machines. I find i can spend loads of time making the sound, so having a sound to begin with, as the inspiration would be helpful. I'll post a couple too when i see how you're going to do it.

Peace,
kpa

I'm soooo guilty of this... Not sure how long you have been using Live but what I did the other day was to go back and listen to my first Live set back when Live 3 was out... Anyway it was interesting to hear and to see how I have progressed as a musician/producer...

Glad it's not just me :)

But I've been making my own tunes now for about 7 years, starting with just loops and one of the first eJay programs, progressing through the Acid Pro series and then Live 4, 5 and 6. But I have a whole ALBUM from eJay and I struggle to get 1 tune finished these days :)

Is that just for PC users, or is it Mac too? As it seems to me probably more Mac users on these boards than PC...

Looks like it's for mac too, just use Firefox browser to do the deal, Safari isn't supported.

By the way, I am the king of unfinished ideas. ESPECIALLY reason files with one section of music and when I go back and listen I'm like ''ahh that's an old one''.

I'm in on the Tubes thing with wnyone else that's doing it.

I am the WORST with this. I find starting a new idea tons of fun and finishing a song to be hell.

This is actually one of the killer features of Ableton that sold me on it completely. I can drag clips or entire sets into other sets from the browser, making "merging" totally easy.

So I usually name short ideas by BPM and then "merge" a bunch together of similar tempo range and see how they can go together to create a new full song.

It is SOOOO nice not having to export things and make and import midi files and all that mess to try these things out.

But you need to have parallels,if you are on mac.
Maybe you guys know any other site exept tubesnow?that support macintosh with out to have parallels,Because i don't have parallels on my macbookpro and i like the idea to share music with others.
Cheers.

On a bit of a tangent, I've found that the first 90% of a tune requires only 10% of the total energy to create.

The last 10% requires the other 90% of the energy.

The hardest part of making music isn't learning to program sequences, or record instruments or use fx and stuff.

The hardest part is learning how to finish.

Amen to that. I'm quite good at writing tunes and choruses or programming sequences and drums, but getting the whole thing together is really hard. Normally it's just me or someone else singing my lyrics over a two or four bar loop...
