Does anyone know if the buttons are "bashable"? I mean, can you hit them with some force without damaging any part of the unit? I'm thinking LEDs/PCB here...
The buttons push down onto some PCB and make a "conductive rubber" ring, short the lead/copper traced below them. I think it's as shock proof as it can get.

Maybe if your LED's inside the button stand too tall, once every while you Bashed on your button, you might push down the LED. This could break away that LED. I don't think they are serially connected, so that would mean lights-out for that button... and an easy fix. But to garner that much pressure, you must be playing like a gorilla.

Keep in mind, also, that this button matrix is not pressure sensitive as the MPCs ones. It's not geared towards velocity switching etc. It's binary ON or OFF, that's it.

Wait a second, I think there's a number I can quote for the button's pressure resistance, let me check: ....

sorry, could not find it at this time.
did find this, though:
Monome Home wrote:molded translucent silicone button pad with conductive pill. the mechanical characteristic was certainly the most tricky aspect of the design. we wanted a light press with a definitive snap, keeping wobble to a minimum.

button face measures 0.75” x 0.75” with slight rounding

electrical contact is made when the conductive donut-shaped pill presses against the circuit board, which has an intertwined star pattern.
They are manufactured, apparently, here:
http://precisionpolymer.com/

To sum up: i don't own one yet ... but they seem definitely bashable to me ... if bashing is defined without the bannanas and the hanging vines...

current not voltage...

Post by OrangeSunshine » Tue Jun 26, 2007 9:32 pm

Well it's still a current problem... but I now understand how the diodes are enabling discrete detection.

The terminals are 'scanned' individually rather than in unison...

Diodes prevent current flow back up closed switches... not the open ones.

So now the question is... will it be easier to rewire in the diodes with wires to the terminals... bypassing the entire PCB matrix... or do you think we'll be able to hack up the PCB by scratching in spots for them?

ummm diodes also contain a discrete voltage drop, but nevermind.

Desperately trying to save the pennies for two full kits. If I miss this like I missed the original Monome I'll do something regrettable.

my kit's assembled, no problems. about 3 hours for me, I was taking my time and had a few drinks on the side. break it down into a few nights work
logic board - (really easy), good practice to start on.
LEDs - the same thing over and over 64 times
diodes - same thing over and over with smaller parts

then slap on the ribbon cables.

for the software, tehn has it linked
- FTDI driver, install like any driver
- MAX/MSP runtime (free)

In the Max runtime open
- mono serial
- mono test (or whatever the names of those two modules, it's all documented.)

I'll order a case next week, plastic, about $150. I might put screws in the bottom that can be used to open it all up and cover them with plastic feet, also considering a ring of velcro around the edge.

Accelerometer on the way too.

worth the wait 8)

and it turns out that LED selection isn't so picky, just get 3mm LEDs not 5mm. I ended up with orange, but will look into blue over time.

my kit came today. need to see about ordering parts now, and eventually get around to ordering a face plate.

I just soldered my main board! It's plugged into the computer and the initial drivers are installed - so far so good!

I guess tomorrow I will get all the patches and continue the testing

Am I totally assed out unless I install .NET 2 framework on my computer?

I just read that it is required for monomeserial

because that would mean sp2 also I think, which I really do not want to do!!! agh
