I know you were just kidding hoffman...
...but it sent a shiver down my spine...
I would hate for live to become a VJ app. ...I'd rather they keep improving the software for the musicians
it says 'Music Creation Production and Performance' on the label...
and so far Ableton has really been consistent in making sure it stays that way..
Current Video support ensures that you can use it ONLY for scoring .
...I'm very cool with that.
(although messing around and Warping loops/slices in live is neat)
I also do VJ gigs from time to time (Arkaos+Live//VisualJockey+VVVV for making my Material)
...and been meaning to get 'Jitter' when I get some free time on my hands to learn it...
such apps. will still excel over live for Visuals even with qt export and 3 VJ effects
plus you will still be able to use live for sequence triggering in other software so Ableton doesn't really have an 'edge' for the VJ market...

As long as Cycling 74 leave the GUI stuff to Ableton, I'd be optimistic that whatever comes of this new relationship will be pretty exciting for most Live users.

NAMM in a couple of weeks, wonder if we will get more info :o

Have you ever seen a max/msp GUI?
In my life
Why do I smile
At people who I'd much rather kick in the eye?

So far the best thing I heared out of this whole deal is that Max version 5 will be taking influence from Ableton's interface. If I felt half as comfortable in max as I did in Live I would go into business for myself immediately.

It used to say "Live Sequencing instrument".
Then they slapped a couple of piano's from the garageband images on the Live box and started calling it "complete".

Ableton is run by 2 separate companies within. The sane people and the marketing people. Who will win this year?

As you already could noticed, the sane fraction is on the winning side this year, let`s rejoice!

Yeah, but how long until they unleash the marketing guru?

(The part of the marketing guru is played by W. Shatner)

from an interview with comic hero Bernd,
german only..

for the rest of the cartoon:

rough translation..
A: Cycling stands for 'Anything goes', Ableton for 'It doesn't come easier'.
But to guarantee Live's workflow we have to be very carefull what features to put in or not..
This can result in some people getting disappointed because Live doesn't offer them what they need..
And that's where Cycling comes in..

Q: Is the direction of the plugins going to be aimed at internal Live effects or are you going to offer 3rd party plugins that can be used in other hosts as well?

A: The focus will be on an integrated solution. The aim is to bring the products and technologies of the two companies closer together..

hmmm...a picture is starting to form.....

1. it will be a unique product for both Ableton and C74
2. it will enable us to do what we want somehow

I didnt say it was a clear picture

I'm getting a picture here;
It's going to be another, new, runtime like technology that enables us to route what ever we want inside Live..

The plugins can be build in a cut down, easy to use version of max that will be available for Live users only, as an add-on product, called Maxable..
It will come with a library of pre-made plugins and a library of building blocks to create your own..
These plugins (pluggo like) can only be used in Live and are GUI'd like Live ..

We, the Able-fan-boys'n'galls, get the so wanted modularity in Live (the people who don't want/use it still have a clutter free app)

They, the max users, might be interested in using/buying Live and this new product..

They, Ableton an Cycling, have a new product to sell and win all the next years music industry awards..

Me, Poster, hopes he is very close..

:D

boggles the mind really

havent spent much time with max/msp so I'm finding it harder to visualise how it will work

how will it interface with Live?

will it be rewire-like - where you choose the editor for the c74 envrionment - perhaps most similar to Plogue Bidule

or will it be a totally native to Live, like a big editor view - or even a new screen - like an 'object' view, a bit like a cross between reaktor and the logic environment, but in one screen like Live does now?

Just as Pluggo's do..
There could be some 'transition' plugs that are able to route data from the runtime to Live elements?
Pluggo data cannot be routed to Live, so some sort of communication has to be established....

I think it will have a separate enviroment/editor that doesn't communicate with Live at all..
It's just for building your plugins..

Using 2 apps in a pseudo rewire/runtime mode does not sound like a Ableton solution to me..
It has to be done inside Live i think..
not the building but the music making..
