dont know what it's like in the US but in Australia we have one that covers all your gear in venues or even in an unlocked car

totally designed for musicians - plus it includes public liability

not trying to be an arse about their loss, just saying I see insurance for gear as one of those types of bills you just have to pay, like electricity
me too, but not everyone is as fortunate and/or wise.
i've had a lappy stolen as well as more than a few instruments in my day.
so he has probably learned his lesson..hindsight is 20/20.
so you gonna help or talk?

I think they're just trying to offer advice for other people reading the thread who may not have thought of this.

Wow! There's an ignorant generalization.

Actually I was trying to be helpful as my basement (i.e. my studio) flooded 2 weeks ago and barely missed the majority of my gear. My renter's insurance didn't cover any flood damage (only Federal Govt. insurance covers flood - LET EVERYONE KNOW!! - no private insurer will cover flood damage). So my buddy recommended instrument insurance, which until then, I never knew about such insurance and certainly didn't know that my renter's insurance didn't cover flood (it only covers water damage associated with fighting fires).

And, btw, I practiced human rights and immigration law buddy. I was an advocate for the poor. But continue with your low brow, uninformed jabs at an entire profession - one that will probably serve your interests one day.

That really does suck. There are some low-life thieving scumbags out there... (apart from the lawyers...)

If any good can come out of somebody else's misfortune, it would be as incentive for others to get insurance, especially those who rely on their gear professionally.

I f*cking hate paying £700 ($1400) a year for insurance, but I couldn't afford to lose everything. And when my iBook's motherboard gave out recently, the insurance bought me a new Mac Book.

assuming you're from the US;
blame it on that lovely "i'll sue your ass' culture you americans created..

here in europe a lawyer still seems to be a decent profession..
at least till the day you need one..

I live near Chicago and had the flood issue too a couple years ago. None of my stuff was covered. Renters and homeowners Insurance in the midwest US typically doesn't cover flood or earthquake (and we're long overdue for a big one of those too).

poster your views of the US are hilariously miopic. did you know that we eat our young and have sex with our parents? anyway, I'm off to lunch at McDonalds in my baby harp seal fueled SUV.

Hi, I am piqued.
So, It's $1400 for a year of protection. It includes, instant replacement?
Is it like car insurance, in the sense that if you crash the next year around they tell you "well this year is going to be more expensive, 'cause you are risky!"
How much do people already covered pay?
How much equipment are you covering $5k, $20k?

Oh, and yes, I read and shared the disgust and sadness of the OP (just, had nothing to say... which is sad in itself)

I know it may be no good within a live set-up (or anything else, but hey, it works flawlessly) but I would gladly donate an M-audio Audiophile 192 pci soundcard...

Just let me know if it will do any good!?

Best

$1400 annually covers about $30K in gear. It does include replacement cost for breakdown for items out of warranty, as long as you have each item insured for the amount it would cost to replace it. It includes worldwide cover, cover in vehicles, breakdown cover, public liability and personal accident insurance, and rental costs while awaiting a claim.

I don't know if you have the equivalent in the US: http://www.musicguard.co.uk/home.asp

They DO rake you over the coals to minimize fraud when making a claim, though. I guess they've dealt with enough musicians!
