Thanks for the link but I sussed it out - eventually !!

Is it possible to do this with any compressor that has sidechaining ability - for instance Wavearts?

I've never actually used a sidechain compressor before, but if the compressor has "sidechaining ability" as you put it, then I guess it has to be able to sidechain! Otherwise it's false advertising

A nice trick with side chain compression:

send a vocal track through an echo effect and then into the compressor. Use the same vocal to feed the side chain input.

While the vocalist is singing the compressor reduces the gain of the echos, but when they pause the echo comes in to fill the gap.
