Strange automation envelope problem

I often use the speaker on/off automation to mess with my tracks in arrangement view. It has always worked well.

However, when I tried to give a long sound a clipped effect usnig speaker off automation, the envelopes have ceased to do anything. I can automate the entire track's speaker as 'off' but it will still play the whole sound. I can even see the automation taking place on the speaker button.

Does anyone know what's going on?

Is the red "Return to Arrangement" button red at the top of the screen. If so, hit that. If your automation lines have turned from red to brown/grey, this is your issue.

yet another thing not covered in the manual (at least not clearly) that was easily resolved with a quick visit to the forum!!
