that first song is absolutely awful, no matter how good of a player she is. why is it that the best players are usually the worst song writers?

aaaaaaaaaahahahahahahahahaha the entire time i was watching these clips, i was think, 'god, this is something only someone who went to berklee would listen to' and she is a berklee student ahahahahaha she's got chops for sure but, fuck, write some songs that aren't just constant shredding. that's such a berklee pitfall, it's like, 'hey, i can shred, i'm gonna do it all the time!'

You know, I tend to agree. There's this thing with 'good taste' in any incarnation, even if it's avant-garde, that rubs me the wrong way. These players probably have a really good time, feeling all the years spent practising have paid off, feeling they're pushing the envelope musically. But it's still just a lot of fashionable bleep-bloink.

i absolutely love bill evans. i'm always amazed how utterly happy is music is, knowing all he's been through in his life.
his last trio with jonshon and labarbera is incrdible.
incidentaly, i'm quite happy that my first EP "bill's break" was based on a bill evans sample. it's a kind of tribute.

ugh, what awful music. there's no taste here; who would spend money to see/hear this garbage? i swear, prog-rock-fusion has to be the worst thing that ever happened to instrumental music...dave weckl, dream theatre, some chick corea....it's all such pointless cock-grabbing music for musicians without any sense of creating an emotional experience. i bet 99% of steve vai's fanbase is wanky guitar players with weaker chops.

for those of you who know instrumental jazz, there's this kid Eldar who's like 16 and has astounding technique, but absolutely no sense of taste. i've never heard a single artistic statement from this kid...it's like music is a sport, not an art. he'll never say anything as profound as bill evans or thelonius monk or duke ellington...

...or the guy he's ripping off, art tatum (who's got technique out the ass, all the way back in like 1930!):

music is about more than what notes you play.

some people have emotions, not techniques.

even if you go way out, phrasing and feeling still wins for me over soulless exercises in pyrotechnical virtuosity (exhibit c) :

although there's a time for pyrotechnical displays of a sort too i suppose (exhibit d):

Yeah, that fusion stuff is really just a circle jerk.

art tatum is truly badass,

Check out Oscar Peterson. He's a big fave of mine.

I like her hair but thats about it. Her expression while playing scares me. And the guitarist looks like a young Gary Glitter.
