Does freezing a track really help with CPU load or just RAM?

Post by jayp » Mon Jul 16, 2007 2:23 pm

I have a Live set in track view with about 50 tracks. Some of them have plug-ins and all of them have some kind of automation. I'm running a MacBook Pro with a MOTU 828mkII firewire and it does pretty well until you get to a point where a lot of files are launching, plug-ins fire up, etc. That's to be expected I know. But when I freeze tracks it really doesn't seem to lighten the overall load all that much. Am I misunderstanding the benefit of freezing?

No, it should help with cpu because it is a switch from an instrument or collection of clips etc --> a single .aiff file playing straight.

It depends on what you're freezing.

If you're freezing a vsti, especially something CPU heavy like NI Massive in best mode or some of Arturia's patches on their classic synth emulations, it helps A LOT. I mean, I've seen it take 40% off the CPU load just on 3 freeze tracks.

Also, if you have gazillions of intensive insert fx or very complicated racks it helps quite a bit.

Yes, I agree it helps. I guess 50 tracks with vst's and multiple racks is a bit excessive!
