Well I spent all damn day figuring this one out so I figured I'd post some info for anybody else who wants to control Gearbox with a MIDI controller... and more specifically changing presets via MIDI. I hope this isn't a repost I did a search and didn't find anything.
The guys at Line6 did a craptastic job of implementing MIDI (but hey it's better than nothing) - you would think they would let you assign a CC# to a preset and make your life easy.
Well they didn't!
=)
You can, however, grab a sysex dump from Gearbox when you change presets and you can use Midi Ox to send that data back to it!
Here's what you need to do:
Download Midi-Ox from here:
http://www.midiox.com/
And then:
Here's how to record and send a preset change.
1. Set midi device in GB options (mine is my sound card)
2. In Midi-ox, set GB as an input device in Options/Midi Devices (no output device or you'll have an endless loop).
3. Make sure "pass sysex" is checked on the Options menu.
4. go to View/Sysex and pick Sysex/Receive Manual Dump.
5. go to GP and load a preset.
6. go back to Midi-ox and the sysex window should have a bunch of hex numbers.
7. highlight all the digits, copy to clipboard and close Sysex window.
8. go to Options/Data Mapping, click Insert and enter all the input command parameters.
9. enter output type Sysex and paste the hex string into the Sysex Message window.
10. go back to Options/Midi Devices and select your midi controller as the input and GB as the output.
If you want to use a specific CC# as an input from your MIDI controller you need to select 'Ctrl' in your event type and type the CC# into the Min and Max under 'Ctrl #'.
That's it, sending a midi command should load the preset. You just need to run Midi-ox whenever you use GB.
