with the vanilla there was really slow pumping possible, really great for shaping the bassline into a new groove...

i tried the sonalksis demo and it was‘t possible in that way to me.. no clue why

But you should be able to get a slow pumping just by increasing the release time. No?

The same amt of ms for attack and release is the same length of time no matter which compressor you use. So it should be possible to tweak the speed to your preference I would think.

yes sure with a long release time, but the vanilla comp is acting different to the sonalksis one.. maybe the sonalksis comp sounds more natural but for shaping the sound i would really prefer vanilla

Tried the demo and had numerous crashes right off so gave up. Anyone else tried these?

Yeah, the first public release (last Friday) had a few issues, but we've fixed those already. Please try the 1.0.2 demo available from our website, I think you'll get on a lot better.

All the best,
Dave

What's up with the sidechain function of Compressor II - is it not an actual sidechain?

from Live manual, p. 256:

"The most exotic feature of Compressor II is the sidechain EQ. The 'sidechain' is the part of the signal that is used to control the compressor."

Thats a frequency based sidechain. It doesn't let you use a kick on a track to control a compressor on another track.

I tried the dbaudioware compressor, but their demo sucks majorly.
It introduces noise every now and then. So by the time you've set up a project to test the compressor, you've already trashed it because its so damn annoying.

sidechain = processing the key signal before it triggers the dynamics effect but without effecting the signal going thru the effect. Usually this is a filter of some sort.

key signal = the signal that triggers the dynamic effect. Ususally this is the signal passing thru the dynamics effect.

external key input = using a different signal to key the dynamic effect. This is what people are mistakenly referring to as "sidechaining"
