Using Rekon Audio Access Virus VST Controller with Live

Post by Robert » Sun Jun 17, 2007 7:49 am

Hi

I notice that on the Rekon website, it says that their Virus controller isn't fully functional with Ableton Live 4 although I think some people do find it OK?

Does anyone have any experience with this? It seems from the rekon site that the problem is midi implementation with Ableton 4 [or that's what they say], and I know from lurking on this forum that midi implementation seems to be - well exactly Live's strongest feature. Maybe it was fixed in 5 or 6?

Much as I love my access virus, the menu system drives me up the wall so I would welcome any advice on workarounds [is it possible to use another host and Rewire or something? I see Plogue Bidule mentioned as compliant but I don't think I am competent with MIDI enough yet to use this].

any advice much appreciated

PS I see that Vyzor's website still says that their product will be released in November 2006, so they are having problems too it seems.

Has anyone even gotten this "plug-in" to work right with a Virus in ANY sequencer? I couldn't seem to get this thing to work no matter what I did, but obviously it had to've worked with someone if the thing even got released. It's not too important now that I finally upgraded to a TI, but I have plenty of friends that this could be really beneficial to.

? workaround for using rekon audio in Live

I notice that you can use a plug-in host like mini-host to run the access virus interface from rekon audio,

http://www.tobybear.de/p_minihost.html

according to rekon, mini-host can host the access interface with full functionality, and I have tried opening minihost in LIve and it works fine.

Could anyone who has bought rekon's try downloading mini-host and seeing if it all works together? then you will have full functionality and the rest of us virus owners will be able to buy rekon's interface! [with a bit of luck!]

How did you open Minihost within Live. I dropped it into my plugins folder but it doesn't appear (which is what I expected as it's an exe and not a dll).

I am an idiot

sorry - I must be losing the plot. I could have sworn that I had managed to open mini-host inside Live - but you are quite right - I hadn't.

What I had done was open it at the same time. Because both Live and minihost were making sounds I thought I had cracked it. The problem is that although I can get them both to share my m-audio firewire audiophile, they're like in parallel universes.

Back to the drawing board - sorry for wasting your time - I feel such an idiot.

The only other thought I had was that plogue bidule might provide a solution...

No probs. Back to the drawing board against. In the end all I want is a decent piece of library software for managing the patches in the Virus - Soundiver is too much of a pain IMO.

Yeah,
Plogue might be the way to go but since I didn't buy the Virus editor I can't try it.
I emailed Rekon a coupla months back about support for Live and never heard back.
Assumed they hadn't figured it out, and lost hope.
But I would love to hear from anyone who has this working on OSX.
G5 Dual 2.7 Ghz, OSX 10.4.11, 8 GB Ram,
Live 7,
Powerbook G4 1.67 Ghz, OSX 10.4.7, 7200rpm 2GB Ram

According to Rekon...

"There is a problem in Cakewalk Sonar and Ableton Live where these hosts are not sending MIDI Poly Pressure messages from a VST correctly. This WILL affect the VST Virus Editor, since it relies on Poly Pressure messages for transmissions of patch data. This issue MAY affect MIDI Controller messages as well, which WILL affect all other editors, since most reKon editors rely on the transmission/reception of MIDI CC messages."

Mini Host and Plogue Bidule and FL Studio are supported because they send these messages. So it is an issue with Live's way of implementing midi I guess. If I was bright enough I would be able to rewire them together somehow!

So I am back to prodding away at the s*dding buttons on my access virus - and that bl**dy menu system! The thing is I really do love the sounds I can get from the virus so I will never give it up and I also know that I will never be able to afford a TI. I can't even afford to upgrade to Live 6!

regards

I don't mind pressing the buttons - it's reaching from my desk to the rack that kills me. Oh, the over-stretching! ;-)
