something a litle different

Post by Rinko » Mon Jul 23, 2007 8:33 pm

i would like your help

basically i'm after something that will really contribute a different sound and character to my music, something to allow me to really shape sounds, something i couldn't get with software.

that's the only criteria. as wide open as you like.

i have considered drum machines (actually bought an Elektron Machinedrum SPS-1 but it was dead on arrival so sent it back - cheers to everyone who took time to answer my drum machine thread) and hardware samplers (cheers to everyone who took time to participate in my hard vs software sampler poll). i have mulled it over for ages and am experimenting.

i would welcome any ideas.

thank you.

Something a bit different... well for an electronic muso you could always get a load of percussion (or make some), things like shakers, marva, tamborines, bohdram, etc and play it through a nice little mic into Live live, if you get me.

Then theres guitar fx. Loads of cool stuff out there - process drum tracks with a guitar compressor (Dod Milkbox, Marshall Ed...). Autowah is dead cool.

For serious money: Sherman Filterbank 2, Line 6 Pro fx, Zoom rack fx (its all good and grungy 8) ) if you dont have serious money I suppose. Analogue Systems modular synth, or Analogue Solutions Vostok matrix synth.

Build an instrument of your own. Guitar strings, some wood, really cheap instrument parts and some spare time and you could have something really inventive. Even a single flat wound bass string tied to a stick thats fixed to an old drum would do, use a violin bow and a guitar slide to pitch the notes like a theremin.

Um what else..

I cant get on with computer filters myself (which is why i have a couple of hardware ones and always drooling for more.) I like the hands on feel. Its very tactile to play with both hands. Oo-er.

cheers for the ideas!

i'm definitely gonna try makin some more of my own little instruments - made a simple shaker ages ago so its time to get busy with some cardboard tubes.

Boimb - i just meant i was after something to add to my sound. i use live 6 in conjunction with audacity, soundhack, fscape etc on my mac and have a nord micromodular, some old lo-fi shit to sample (e.g. 505, vl-tone, gameboy etc) and i sample off vinyl too. obviously i realise that software plays a massive part in modern music and i ain't knockin that - i rely on it extensively myself and love it! can you synthesize a tenor sax sound usin sofware? yes. will it sound just like the real thing? no. from my (limited) experience it seems like there are still a number of cases in which electronic hardware or some other analogue or digital sound source can create particular sounds better (imho) or more easily than software - the variety and the subtle differences in the sound sources and methods you use all add to your sound...I was just looking for more ways to add to my sound. i'd love the g2 but seein as i have the micromodular (not the same obviously but along a similar albeit more limited line) i think i'll look at other options for the mo. cheers for the advice though.
