Parting Shot - Superdamaged/LoFi/Noise-Groove

Post by mdme_sadie » Mon Jul 16, 2007 4:20 am

Just a very short loose thing from a couple of nights ago. Something about the over-compressed blattering sound makes me want to explore it and the whole superdamaged off-tempo groove thing some more.

Sound deconstruction achieved with the tube effect and natural untalent. Me on drums/perc/guitars/bass g./keys and hums. Ableton+Reason.

Very cool, I love this bonged out heavy psychedelic stuff. But a few things detracted for me -
were you running the master through a phaser? There was weird phasing/something issues with what I thought was the master.
Cut the low freqs before you compress it to death! Way too much blown bass.

Just my personal 2c

I agree with pulsoc, unless that's the effect you really wanted. Maybe try to spot more where you add compression or saturation, and yes the phaser on the general sound just looks weird to me :)

Hi, thanks for listening! Nope, no phaser on the master, but flanger on one of the guitars and some phaser on the reverb from the organ.

It's an interesting idea about removing the bass before the destruction, I'll give it a go, but I have to emphasize that the bass destruction or "blattering sound" as I call it is what I find a bit more interesting (and is intentional) here. It gives it a very over heavy sound and a little urgency that I quite like.

I know it's not a classically desirable sound, but as it's all simulation of "bad" effects I'm trying to stop myself from hearing it just as bad, poor mixing, but to see if it can be good or interesting too, to listen to it with fresh ears not thinking about overdriven channels but just the sound itself. Much like guitar feedback or distortion is really based around something undesirable, but now we've grown to like it and use it, so maybe it's possible to turn some of these other undesirables around and see if they can be stylised enough to be cool. Needless to say I have a lot to learn and there's a lot of ways to destroy audio, I don't want to go into complete noise area, just trying to find that sweet spot of noise meets break meets rock and lofi meets something with a little bit of a pop sensibility. It'll be years before I get there though! :)

I think I know exactly where you are heading :) You are essentially emulating the saturated analog sound that came from heavily clipping the tape. Good stuff!

I mean cutting the signal below 40-50 htz, the inaudible stuff. You shouldn't lose the 'blattering', but the overall audible levels should be clearer (and more blattered!)

Fool around with that and repost for us!
