Ardour is audio only. The GUI is quite good. It is not a bad hard disk recorder but doesn't officially support vst plugins and Linux does give support to quite a lot of the dedicated pro audio interfaces.

I think you'd be better off with Reaper for 40 bucks, it can do a hell of a lot more. Or freebie windows software such as Kristal v1 or audacity.

I say meh. 500MHz CPU? Not sure if it has a USB port, which might be handy for... a mouse, or a midi keyboard...? For that price you could get a better spec laptop and a soundcard. I also thought there might be the chance of touchscreen but no... I mean, the cafe I go to for lunch has a touchscreen cash register! I could probably use the cash register to knock out a few tunes while I wait for my baked potato...

I'll echo this,,,
I love the potential of ardour,, but it isn't really in the game yet.
No midi or instrument support,,
although midi is coming up in the development schedule,,
the problem with VST is that steinburg won't license it for linux,, or some such shit,, so it's actually illegal for them to develop an official version of ardour with vst support.
Being open source there are apparently a couple of versions of ardour on the net that have a vst hack but i'm not sure how stable or functional they are,, or even how up to date.

I have, but it's been awhile (~6 months or so?). My impression of it was that it sucked, and although I respect the project itself, I would not find it to fit my tastes at all. I think that this post on the AI blog summed it up well.

i'll wait until it's cheaper though....
