I'm thinking of going mac for my audio and letting my windows machine finally die a slow death. Will my tracks done on PClive load on a mac?

under the circumstances, why would you get a mac for Live, you know that
that will cut your performance in half so whats the motive. I'm just curious

I agree. Wait for Jaguar's release 8/24 to see if people report any performance gains 1st. I just bought a Tibook(800Mhz) in May and it does not perform as well as my 1 Ghz PIII PC. Plus its been in the repair shop twice for a bad stick of RAM and a jammed combo drive (which is still on backorder from Apple)! My 20/20 hindsight says stick with a PC this year.

It's interesting that thr Mac's don't perform live as well, but I'm curious if either is more prone to crashes. I've just had so much trouble with hardware issues and windows. I have a PC laptop but I want to use a mac as well, maily cause I've had so many issue with my USB dongle for Reaktor and I'd like to incorporate Max/MSP in live for more complex fx mods as well. Any MAX/MSP users using with live?

You can make a case that Mac has fewer 3rd party hardware issues however, there are fewer 3rd party hardware choices! You just need to do a lot more research 1st to make sure what you buy will work with YOUR PC.
I go hot or cool on Mac every other week and this week I'm freezing. But in the grand scheme of things both platforms are about equal, each having their own discreet set of problems and charms. All things being equal, I think Macs are prettier and its very cool to have a UNIX terminal to play with. Which I actually used the other day (thanks to tjwet for the thread) to make a symbolic link to an application that LIVE could not see in the browser. You can't do that in DOS.
Again, wait and see if Jaguar improves LIVE's performance before you get a Mac.

hello all.
i've been playing with the live demo a few times, and it looks great! at the moment i only use cubase 5 (and vst fx) and creamware sound cards on a b/w G3 450 Mhz running os9.1 and it works just fine.
cubase is, well, cubase and not very inspiring. i heard of live through several channels, took a peak and liked it. what i'd like to know is: if i buy a pc laptop, will i have to buy two copies of live (like cubase) or is the soft cross platform? i've been reading some topics here on mac vs pc
and i don't care what name is on my computer. i want it to work!!!
i've never worked with pc before, but am willing to give it a shot. especially with mac prices being ridiculously high (and after reading the by far better performance in favour of pc when it comes to 'live')
at the moment, the way to go would be to make the loops, sounds,... on my desktop mac with cubase and the fantastic pulsar devices, arrange them in live, for convenience maybe still on the mac
then swap the lot to the pc laptop, where i can really start the live fun.
does this make sense? or is there another, better way? i'm totally unexperienced on this matter...
ableton, is a ONE copy of live going to work on mac AND pc?

now my only concern would be sound output. i can throw the creamware cards in a magma chassis, but imho this solution is way overpriced, and would cost me as much, if not more, than a RME or motu828 solution. if i buy the laptop, i won't have enough cash to go for one of these units. so how is the built-in sound on pc laptops? (this just as an aside, maybe better asked in another thread)

live runs, in everybody's opinion, better on pc, the same is true for Reaktor. It is probably the reverse for Logic. In order to get a decent laptop (PC) you will have to spend substantial cash too, though - the Toshibas and Sonys are reported to run very well with live, I've tested a Sony Vaio 316g (now replaced by the 416G) - great 16inch screen, so scrolling becomes necessary less often, but also big and heavy
My experience: I tested one of my songs in OS9, X and WinXP, and processor usage was about 90, 100, and 50 (!!!!) percent, respectively (approximate values). I also ran a demo of live on an ibook, and it actually seems to perform as well if not better than the PB (possibly due to the lack of Altivec optimisation)
