ableton live over hardware looping device?

heya per,
i think i worked out how to do on the fly looping in live 3 - if you just launch the clip when you've finished recording it stops recording and loops the clip. although i think you have to press it at the exact moment you want the clip to start otherwise it all goes rather messy - i need to get myself a midi foot pedal of some sort.
the only thing is, as i mentioned above, although the clip plays, it doesn't send any sound to the master output until i move the velocity slider in the clip view - very strange. i think i'll have to get that dave hill book someone suggested...

Per, I am relatively new to live, but I can have immediately looping samples in Live 3. This is my experience:
1. record enable track
2. select clip starts recording
3. select clip stops recording AND looping begins immediately of the recorded material.
I think this only works if the track launch mode is set to Trigger, but this is the default so it shouldn't be too elusive. Anyway, he should be able to get what he needs now without waiting for Live 4.

edd,
You don't have to hit stop/record right before the beat. Change your quantization setting to something higher (1 bar, for instance) and then you can click stop/record anytime within 1 bar of the end of your loop. Keep playing until the end, and it will automatically stop.
I don't know about your Velocity slider thing -- weird, maybe an incompatibility with your sound card. And, yes, a FCB1010 foot controller is heaven.

Ok, I see. Thanks for telling. Then my post is only valid if clips are manipulated in Toggle mode. The way I use Live I have to stay in Toggle mode most of the time because I record and loop external instruments, like sax or guitar, and when I have recorded and launched a loop I want it to continue playing until I press the midi foot pedal (using a FCB1010) to turn it off.Anonymous wrote:Per, I am relatively new to live, but I can have immediately looping samples in Live 3. Just chipping in here for a quick question, regarding foot controllers.
Personnally I'd never be a poweruser of a foot controller so the BEhringer would be overkill for me would a Digitech Control8 be able to do the same [ http://www.digitech.com/products/c8.htm ] essentials as the FCB1010 ?
When looking for a footcontroller I'd like it to be bbetter transportable together with the laptop/controllerkeyb. - so it's just a matter of size.

Good point! The only thing I don't like with my FCB1010 is its huge format and heavy weight. But it's dirt cheap! If you are about to fly you can by another one at the destination and load it with your own settings from a midi sy-sex file.Mbazzy wrote:When looking for a footcontroller I'd like it to be bbetter transportable together with the laptop/controllerkeyb. - so it's just a matter of size.
The Control8 looks cute. Downloading manual now to see in detail what it can be used for. My FCB really IS heavy....
The Digitech Control 7 goes dirtcheap on Ebay , but only sends programchanges , no cc ... but this Control8 really looks promising, hope you will be able to confirm ... in th emean time I'll be on the lookout for other small footcontrollers.

Anonymous wrote:dude, I'm a bassist/guitarist/keyboardist in many bands, and got into live looping with hardware (loop station, also messed with boomerand and line6). TRUST me--Live 2 or 3 on a fast laptop with a good soundcard blows the hardware out of the water. Haven't looked at the 606, but its hardly useful for on the fly sampling with instruments--you'd need foot control. I use Live with a fcb 1010 foot controller and do all live looping shows--no pre-recorded material. Live is awesome--10 seperate loops easy. Individual mute/vol./pan/crossfader/effects for each loop--no problem. The 606 just can't touch the depth, flexibility and routing options of Live. As for the laptop setup--yeah it takes more time, but when you're giggin and setting up PA and stuff its no big thing. Main thing is you want to have a good laptop, fast soundcard, and practice with live and your band a LOT before just bringing it onstage. One for your own learning, two to make sure your system and means of working are stable.

Ryan, judging by the amount of posts I've seen of yours concerning the power of Live's live looping capabilities, I need your help! I hit the wall on a few hopes that Live can't grant (as of now)!
First one: I want to loop, then overdub on the fly (no goofy click tracks, no set tempo. We play a lot of music that changes time signatures quite often). In other words, something that will loop without the "1 bar" quantization, a la Echoplex. Yes, I LOVE the idea of going laptop (issues of carrying extra wires along, "cold booting" and the rest are irrelevant to me!), the hardware Echo's sampling is 16 MHz (boo!) and in mono (double boo!). However, that fact still seems to remain that there is no streamlined way to overdub loop over loop in a "floating" time frame. In other words, Live doesn't allow me to hit one button, record another loop over a previous one, hit the button again and boing! there's a beautiful overdub that ALWAYS is in sync with any previous looping.
Second: one button multiple undo's. Unless there is a peripheral program that decodes ctrl-Z into a midi command. That is quite handy on the Echoplex.
If you say that Live blows hardware out of the water, it needs to address these issues!
Have fun, Jason
