That is a really elegant design. So there would be 8 wires running into each of the x-coordinate sockets and 8 into each of the ones for the Y coordinates?

I asked at the monome forum, too, & Tehn's answer left me with more questions:

it'd be easy. just create 8 groups of 8. have col be "group" and row be
one of the 8 in each group. use an inline diode.

you got it with the 8 x-axis and 8 y-axis, his grouping idea is just an abstraction from that, he's been neck deep in this design for years, he came up with this shit has been taking it further for months now.

the diodes...
because of the matrix design on the LEDs it's possible to push several buttons at once and induce voltages across a button you didn't push, this is called ghosting, the diodes prevent that voltage from building up. don't worry about the details, just for now know that diodes prevent ghosting when you put buttons in a matrix configuration.

Hello folks,

I've just ordered my 40h kit - really excited at the prospect of building it! What I was wondering about is the potential of connecting some sort of proximity detector like the Roland D Beam thingamy. I have done searching on here, at monome.org and the net in general but haven't had any luck in discovering whether it would be possible to connect such a device to the basic 40h kit.
I am a bit rusty when it comes to things electronic related, having not done any soldering since A-Level physics at school, but want to use this as a way to (re)learn things.

So what do people think - is such a thing possible?

shows pics of the IR sensors I installed.

they're the ones from www.sparkfun.com not exactly what they're selling now but pretty much the same thing.

dead simple to install, they work just like a potentiometer. 3 pins, one to 5V, one to gnd, the other to signal.

on the current 40h you can install 4 of them at once.

Cleanly built, sturdy,ready for painting/finishing, available in a bunch of sizes, 2" deep, just add yr top panel.

Less than $15 if you're lucky.

saw some of her prints at a show many years ago and all were framed like that - the print laminated to 1/4" MDF with a mitered wood frame behind that...
