Can I use more than one midi keyboard?

Post by beume082 » Thu Aug 09, 2007 12:16 pm

I want to make a setup, so that I can trigger loops (just on and off) from 8 different keyboards.....So that each keyboard triggers clips on it's own track! That way I can jam with 8 persons. Is that possible?
THANKS.

sure - you've got 16 midi-channels.. assign every keyboard to a different channel then do your mapping to the devices and controllers.

it's different than that. what you see in the preferences are PORTs. in midi world there hierarchy goes like this

a keyboard connects to a midi plug, the physical plug, the software sees the plug as a port
each port has 16 channels
each channel has notes, cc#s, nrpn, rpn, sysex, etc. (with Live you really only worry about notes and cc#s)

in the preferences you're setting ports in Live to instruments.
on a track by track basis you can set the midi input to ALL IN or select a port, there's reasons to do either depending on what you're doing.

where they don't separate is using the REMOTE stuff.

short answer - yes.

lives midi inputs see each physical input, but when doing assignments live ONLY sees midi control changes (CC's) and midi channels. if you use the same channel on each controller then the any knobs/keys/buttons that use the same control change numbers will do the same thing in live on both controllers...

if you can set each controller to send ALL it's controls on an the same unique midi channel (ie all of keyboard 1 is on channel 1, all of keyboard 2 is on channel 2 etc.) then there will be no assignment overlap and what you want to do won't be a problem.

how you get them each on a different channel can be done a couple of ways - the best would be to set it in the hardware. this'll make life simpler really, otherwise you need to change the midi channels in software using tsomething like midiox (on pc) or controlaid (on mac). you can do it using a midi loopback (like midiyoke for example) and routing the controller data through midi tracks in live and back out to lives remote inputs as well...

Ok, i have the same question ut i dont see the answer for that.. or i might be kinda dumb tonite
i have a keystation 61 that i'll like to use for playing piano and rhodes sounds, and a small m-audio (25-keys), so i be able to play a lead (synth) on the small.

is that possible? i'm afraid that both keyboard will be linked to the same instrument

Yes they will, if they come in on the same interface. but if there are separate MIDI inputs, then you can choose them in the MIDI tracks (instead of ALL)

otherwise you could use different MIDI channels, even on the same interface input.

Put the rhodes on one track, and set it's MIDI input to "controller 1 USB"

Put the lead synth on another track, and set it's MIDI input to "controller 2 USB"

of course, change " " to whatever it actually says for your MIDI ports...
