I lived in Oakland/Lake Merritt way back, had a nice view of the city too..
That just brought back a classic memory.

So TD, you writing the SF edition of Fodor's this year? Good stuff, a few things there I didn't know.

Beats me I don't know you, but I may know of a place opening up soon here. If interested PM me.

great great post Tone

thanks for taking the time to break it down

Beats - best of luck and i hope you get the F@#$ out of the sweaty armpit that is San Jose as I lived there for years. I have always wanted to be in the city, although I am diggin sleepy Santa Cruz. I have lived in Alameda and on Lake Merritt and although better than san jo, I wouldn't recommend it.

Lower Haight is high on my list in SF... the dogpatch sounds exiting too

KU - what's up with life in Aptos? I used to drive to SC on the PCH every weekend in the convertible, SF to SC down 101 in a few CDs, back in 280 in 1 hour. dunno if I ever hit Aptos. is it like montara/moss beach/half moon bay further north? santa cruz mountains are a jewel.

I cop a lot of SF attitude, half out of humor, half out of pride brought on by the inconveniences. I'd vote to take down the bridges and build a moat on the peninsula. I have my SF rants. CA is a great state all in all, cool to hear about other parts. there's a poster from eureka... who??

When did they ban carpet in SF? All ads for rooms and apartments advertise "wall to wall hardwood floor" like it's the greatest thing ever invented. Well, it's not. What it is, is easy to clean. If I was planning to throw keggers in my bedroom then hardwood floor would be ideal, but I'm not. To me hardwood floors in bedrooms makes the room feel cold and unfinished. If I had my way the entire planet would be lined with carpet.

Glad to see you considering this move. It's a good move...you just gotto be in it to really appreciate it...and that goes for music, food, everything. I really wish that at some point in my almost 8 years that I lived in the Bay Area, I had actually lived in San Francisco. 6 years in Berkeley, and another 2 in San Jose, didn't really do me justice. The city by the bay is the only option.

I currently have no ties to anybody or anything other than my job. Once in the city I plan to get heavily involved in the local music scene. I would be doing myself a great disservice and anybody else that is tied to work or family and says "If I didn't have a wife, mortgage, and/or kids I would so……" if I didn't live in the city. I consider myself lucky in that respect. I tried the other traditional goals in life and they didn't quite work out, but instead of getting depressed about I am going to pursue the things I probably should have a long time ago. Shit happens for a reason.

my music time is pretty booked, heavy into monome 40h, learning max/msp, keeping up on guitar and generally making music but I did see that the Chemical Brothers are coming to SF, that'd be a good excuse to put faces to names.

this can be a good venue, parking's real easy too.

Sonoma does suck for venues (and the drive into the city.....shoot me please!) but you do have one of the worlds best live reggae bands based out of there..... Groundation...they should be done with the European tour soon.

Thanks for the post ToneDeft, I love the city & travel there quite a bit from humboldt and its nice to see a local break it down like that.

In my experience parking should be a big factor in where you choose to live. I have friends who live in the sunset (17th & pacheco...not sure what part of sunset that is considered) and you can always park right next to their house, but you have to drive or bus into the city to do stuff; but in other parts of the city it would be a major pain in the ass to own a vehicle, but you could walk more easily to everything you need.

Exit planet dust (awesome album) and the remix album 1 or two later ( with the spiritualized remix) was really my favorite, I have not followed their career since. I kind of fell into trance for a good while......

I have had times where I have spent more time looking for parking than the actual drive. I just heard of Groundation the other day, I'll keep my ears open.
