Never had problems with my audiophile 2496, nor with it's drivers or support. What totally sucks though is that I'm still waiting for the Vista drivers to come out.

so what are people's recommendations for audio/midi interfaces in the $200 range? I have a laptop coming in next week and would like a simple firewire interface. I don't really need many I/O on it, just a stereo in and 2x stereo out +midi would do fine. Headphone out would be nice as well, and maybe an instrument input (for electric guitar). I'm considering the M-Audio audiophile firewire but if there are better options in that price range...

Check out the Echo cards, maybe the new Emu 0404USB.

With the exception of one problem with a driver, which was easily solved by rolling back to the previous version, my FW410 has been extremely reliable. I can't say the same thing for the old Oxygen8 I used to use, which would disconnect itself mid-gig on occasion.

With that said, I'm outgrowing the capabilities of the M-Audio devices, and have been looking at MOTU and RME to replace the FW410 in my rig.

FWIW

Ive had my M-audio firewire audiophile for about 2 years and had no problems with it.

My old Radium 61 broke after about a year, and now I'm using an Axiom.
