im completely new to it all anyone give me a bit of help....

hi, just got ableton live 6 and need some help. my other half has been mixing for years. we have a m-audio firewire sound card to use (i think thats what it is). will the mac need to be linked up to the mixer he uses as well as this. i know the sound won't be good but is it possibly so i can sit on my pregnant bum on the sofa and learn firstly how to mix with ableton before i move on to anythin else...i have been using the video tutorial and when i come to change output config i only get 1/2 or 1 or 2 the video shows up to 7/8 and i cant use the headphones to listen to one track whilst the other comes throught the mac. Is there something else i'm doing wrong?
