shock mounted laptop? live recording with loud vibrations?

Post by sunless » Mon Aug 20, 2007 8:28 pm

Hey all...
I was recording some stuff last weekend straight to hard disk in very close proximity to the band / sound system and was having some disk errors when trying to save.

I'm 99.9% sure that this was a result of the vibrations on the hard drive whilst recording. Has anyone run into this before? Anyone have any ideas of how to get around it?

I'm using a MacBook Pro as part of the setup.

Any help would be greatly appreciated. I'm sure someone has done a Live/PA that included recording right in front of a massive system...

Thanks in advance!
Adam

I carry a piece of foam. Still not 100%, but it's better than without.

the reason i say that is because i had a 4200 rpm drive on a laptop and it kept skipping, seemingly because of vibrations or heat, but it all stopped when i got a 7200 rpm external firewire drive

I was on the last gig of the Dutch band "The Gathering". They keyboard player had some laptop for loops or something.. probably Powerbook or Macbook Pro and while they were playing, it was bouncing because of the sound and I was so wondering when it would fail, but I didn't notice anything. And they've had it before too, I'm sure.
