So many VSTs. So many folders.

Hi Everyone,

When installing huge vst plugins, like NI Komplete 4, you have folders of sample librarys. Where is the best place to nest all of them. I want to make sure Live can find all of them without any stress. SHould i nest them inside C:\Program Files\ Native INstruments.. or will live find them if i just create a new folder let's say in My Documents for Sample Librarys. Thanks for the help.

On my machine, I use the default sample library location. Since my music apps are on my E drive, it's E:/Program Files/Native Instruments/Sample Libraries.

With any NI app, run it in standalone and check library paths/rebuild databases before trying to use it as a plugin for the first time. This also applies to any time you update one of the apps; run the app in standalone and rebuild the database right after the update. If you follow that procedure, Live (or any other host) will always find the associated content.

I have found a great organizational trick with VSTs. I load them wherever makes sense. Then I put a shortcut to the DLL in an organized folder structure in /My Documents/Ableton. I use subfolder to sort out utilities/effects/instruments .... reverb/eq/compressor/warmer etc. This way I don't have to worry about where the installer is loading it, I only have to organize the shortcuts. Works great with Live! BTW, multiple shortcuts can be used for the same DLL so that you can have it under different subfolders. Try it, you'll like it!

thanks for your great tip. you are saying i can make a shortcut to the DLL and then put the shortcuts in a folder and use them in the file browser?
