I've followed directions and can't seem to get any recognition in Ableton of the midi controller being connected.
On the preferences tab / MIDI/SYNC tab I can select this controller as a control surface but the input tab is greyed out & un-selectable. The computer itself recognizes the controller but not the software.
What am I doing wrong?
Thank you in advance for any help.

Got one to and workes fine for me. I downloaded the driver from here:
http://de.m-audio.com/index.php?do=support.drivers
(choose "keybordseries" and so on)
Worked fine for me, didn´t have to choose the right keyboard later in Ableton, Live did that itselfe
Important: unplug the keyboard first! Than install the driver! Than reboot and plug the keyboard on.

I have an Axiom-49 and had the same problem as you describe. I was really frustrated because I went and got the latest driver and still nothing. I had the same problems with my Trigger Finger a while back and after reading on this forum I was about to give up on m-audio.
I even tried to mess around in the included m-audio Enigma editor which wasn't doing anything not to mention hard to understand. In the MIDI section of ableton live I could select Axiom but it was greyed out or unselectable in the next two boxes. Very few people on this forum have actually figured out the real reason for this, but I spent literally 8 hrs or more searching around online and finally found the answer on another forum.
Basically what happened is that the correct driver "seemed" to install (even showing the Axiom device name at first) but Microsoft XP decides to install it's own driver instead (Not sure who to blame). Apparently the other one can work somehow in a very limited mode but it's NOT what you want.
So to fix this problem you have to go into the Device Manager. You get here by right clicking on My Computer and going to Hardware. and find the section where it has Sound, Video And Game Controllers. Hit the Plus sign to show the installed devices. You should see a thing that is like "USB Audio Device". If you have any USB audio devices installed esp by M-audio take great care before you do anything. Make sure that you do a system restore point in case you replace the wrong driver or screw something up. I guess you could write down what is listed, uninstall, and see what's missing to determine if it's the correct one or not.
Basically what you will need to do is right click on it and update the driver and select the same m-audio driver you tried to install before. Once you do this manual update it forces it to use the correct driver rather than the generic Microsoft one. Make sure that you plug your Axiom-49 device in BEFORE you start Ableton Live or it will most likely not show up. This can also be a simple fix if you have installed the driver correctly already.
One rule of thumb when installing any USB device is that you should always install the drivers first before plugging in the device. This often can lead to this type of problem. I believe the Trigger Finger uses the same driver so I can imagine that it would probably fix problems with this device also.
Below are some very useful links for users of the Axiom keyboards. Once you have this connected properly you can use at least 3 presets that are already mapped to Ableton Live controls. There is a axiom livepack for 5.0 but it will still work in 6.0 as well. The second link is a more visual explanation of the same thing.

Once you have the keyboard setup there there is a special impulse instrument rack that was created by Covert Operators that allows you to map 128 impulse slots which will span the keyboard. On the axiom keyboard you can change the octave up and down very easily. This is really useful if you want to load in a ton of drums or one-shots and play around.
