Native Instruments Massive For sure
One of the best synths I have used in the last couple of years, I use it for most things now. The sound is second to none.
It is also one of the easiest synths to program and get good sounds out of quickly cant believe nobody has mentioned it.
If you havent seen it you really need to check it out its off tap!!

For me the synths i write and do sound design with and get the most use day in and day out would be:
Absynth
Sylenth 1
Zebra 2
Cameleon 5000
BLUE (Rob Papen)
and Reaktor 5 (which is far more then just a synth)
hey Neb good to see someone else besides me uses "Sytrus"

how do these synths (zebra, massive, sylenth1) fare in terms of cpu consumption?
N.I.'s synths usually are pretty demanding in this regard, aren't they?
I think there's still a N.I. summer sale going on till august 31st. buy 2 synths (massive, absynth 4, fm8), get one free. if you already have one of those, you can just buy one and get the third one free.
I was considering it, since I already have absynth 4, but the fm8 demo somehow didn't really tickle my fancy...
on a totally different note, I downloaded the zebra2 and surge demos yesterday, and my first impression was that the zebra2 gui was clearer to me than surge's, even though the first is on several pages...personal taste, of course....just as a warning that "more pages/tabs" doesn't necessarily mean it's less clear and more fiddly to use....

I've found Zebra to be pretty light on the CPU actually.
I guess after you checked out the demo you realized this too
I'd become interested in that NI summer sale, just for Massive, but FM8 doesnt really call my attention right now. And besides I dont think getting a new synth will be such a great idea. Zebra2, Absynth 4, and V-Station are working well enough for me right now. Think it's best to just dedicate my time to mastering these instead of trying to learn to use a new one.

Zebra was pretty awesome to use when I tested the beta ages ago.
My vote would be for either Zebra or Reaktor myself though I am a huge Kubik Fanboy I must confess
and absolutely Love Dimension Pro
.
Though I am VERY strict with myself on the Number of Reaktor Ensembles I actually use and fine most of the Factory Library + a Handful of extras are more than enough with your own Custom Snaps once you dig deep programming wise.

Somewhere between a rock and a hard place is actually nowhere.
