Maybe, but they've already brought out their recent big releases (Cubase 4 and Sequel).

To all dummies out there, not knowing the difference between a company's name and a product name:

Ableton is the company's name!
Live is the name of the sequencer!

No it's not. It's maddenning enough just losing a couple of hours work - let alone four months worth!

I really feel for whoever it is. And if it's Ableton it's bad news all around. Their business projections will have gone out of the window, and there will be difficulties getting the whole Live project back up to speed for them. That will affect us all, at least indirectly (and - worst case scenario - possibly even in terms of upgrade costs etc in the future)

I think it's pretty unlikely it was Ableton

firstly, all of the staff who work there in any kind of development capacity would have had to lose their copies as well

and second, I somehow cant see them telling the music press about such a cock up

I reckon the article is probably a piss take or an attempt to get back at someone for not giving them an interview

Well, they did say one of our favourite DAWS. I don't read the mag, but are they usually very keen on Live?

Yes, they love it. But I agree with the person who suggested FL Studio could be an alternative... small developers maybe less likely to have multiple systems/versions.

It's not impossible that a single developer was responsible for this if the piece of code they were working on was central to a lot of the system (though why you'd let an idiot like that work on something so important I'm not sure).

Guys,
things are much more horrifying than they seem!
Few months ago Cycling74 announced it would collaborate with ableton on a joint project.
They flew 2 geeks to berlin on a secret mission. While one of the geeks distracted the ableton team with an expose on the philosophy behind max/msp (what else?), the other geek sneaked into the main computer room, stealed live 7's code and destroyed the computers with a baseball bat!
live 7 disapeared and will now become Max/msp 5!!!

;)

Was just about to say, that
maybe L7 is delayed because they just want to get a bit of the Cycling74 thing in there... the paranoid anxiety is getting out of hand.

Any serious development effort would certainly use some sort of Source Code Management like cvs, svn, Mercurial etc. After a central system failure, you'd loose your day's worth.

The article is moot, plainly playing on people's ignorance and "where's-the-next-version" anxiety. Many a CM people share that, not only Abe fans.

a top secret source tells me that a famous actor is involved in a secret gay love romp .. which would be disaster for his fledgling marriage to his equally famous new wife to find out about. Industry insiders are whispering that I am filling up column inches with completely made-up blather ... sources say it is simply because I have a killer hang-over and the print deadline is in half an hour. I say - shhh! top secret insider told me to type this space-filling nonsense.

is that 100 words yet?

etc.
