Rewire with Ableton works randomly. Why??

I have Ableton installed on my desktop and laptop. I have tested rewire with Sonar (so i'm working on a PC) on both as recently as maybe a week ago. On both machines, it worked. However it's now randomly not working on my desktop.

I've made no major changes on this machine. Maybe it isn't random. Are there any factors that may change whether or not Rewire works on a machine?

All I can think is something is interfering but I can't imagine what. I've just recently installed a new vst but that's it. Is it disk fragmentation? Something has become corrupt? Is reinstallation necessary? If so, is it a Sonar issue or Ableton issue?

Any troubleshooting suggestions?
