Looking for an accurate midi drum kit

Post by m_three10 » Tue Sep 04, 2007 4:28 pm

Hey all, im trying to make ableton work for me as a songwriting tool, but im not really feeling the lackluster midi sounds that come built into it.

I am using reason with custom drum kits for great results, but really would like to consolidate my percussion into ableton and use reason for sounds and keyboard work.

I come to this forum to see if perhaps anyone is using specific vsts that give them realistic velocity controlled sounds for use for a rock/blues/jazz style (not so much electronic)

im open to all ideas, and would really like the input of the community.

for realistic rock type drums you either want to get EZDrummer, Addictive Drums, or BFD. All great for different reasons but they all specialize in real sounding drum kits.

this can be used within ableton for midi mapping and the works?

or its an external program.

All above and there are many more excellent VSTs. It is then matter of personal taste, size- some are really huge and price. I use Reason Drum Kits because:
1. the sound suits my needs 2. Reason sequenzer is tighter. In fact I bought Reason originally just because of RDK. Live`s midi is too loose if you are a demanding player or composer but it has the best rewire integration, specially the two- Reason/Live, so converting to audio in Live is easy and accurate.

These are all VSTs that can be used in Live. Not sure about BFD, but both EZDrummer and Addictive Drums also come with thousands of beat patterns you can drag and drop into Live as MIDI patterns you can edit. These patterns were programmed by actual drummers so they do sound like a real drummer is playing them.

As was mentioned there are a lot of drum machine VSTs out there but the ones I mentioned are known as the best for natural drums and also you won't be spending (wasting?) time sifting through a million drum samples looking for the most natural sounding hits. These VSTs also have room and microphone emulation so they try to come as close as possible to what it's like to record a real drummer and kit in a studio situation.

Of course, there's also the session drums soon to be released as a live 7 add on. Don't think the beta testers have access to it, so no one knows what it's like. But it sounds like the sort of thing you're looking for and it's all pre-programed into the new drum rack system. Should be out pretty soon.
