I just got Comcast internet and cable installed into my new apartment this week... I checked out On Demand music. They had a Live video by Tiesto.

So having heard so much about him... but never hearing him, I decided to check it out.

What I saw was a pretty decent video show, and a VERY generic DJ. His beats were pretty standard. The music was all right... I Guess. Most of his sounds/arpeggios could have come straight from Rob Papen's Blue or Nexus presets.

He moved around a lot, and spun a bunch of turntables, but I couldn't hear anything that he was doing, it just sounded like he was playing a CD. I think he was doing more bobbing his head and dancing then actually making music.

I'm really not trying to diss on him, but for all the hype, I expected something a little better.

Are there some particular tracks I should check out? Or is what I saw pretty much the gist of Tiesto?

Nope...that pretty much sums up Tiesto. All style...no substance.

nope, that's it, you got the full tour, all show, no go. tiesto is the poster boy for so much that's wrong with DJ culture and trance music.

Im just curious - all you tiesto haters - where are you from, and roughly what ages?

Maybe its something that just still appeals to use europeans who are probably in our 30s now and did the Ibiza thing alot 5-10 years ago?

Your right though - the music is mellow etc by todays standards - TBH I tend to think of it as allmost chill out - its actually good music to stick on in the car too/from work and yes - its very stuck in that 1997-2002 ibiza era.

Its not something I would normally choose to for a clubbing night (electro house tends to be my thing for that) but his shows are good and he knows how to pace a long (6hr+) set. I did enjoy his london gig earlier this year.

I dont think he would be a good club DJ anymore though. Who knows though - that last time I ever saw him in a club was a long time ago now.

Funny enough I can see the tiesto/pvd/ivd kind of music enduring in the way 80s crap does just because it represents a place and time for many people who lives have since got bogged down in work/mortgages/families etc. The world has moved on - tiesto hasnt - and maybe thats his appeal to many?

i was playing cards in ac last weekend and i saw a billboard for tiesto at the borgata.

lame americans are into him too.

real dj's don't end up playing casinos in atlantic city.

tiesto represents all things wrong with electronic music

the reasons people say he is good could be applied to Brittany spears, kid rock, in sync, milli vanilli... etc... pop music... all marketing no substance

tiesto empitimises all that is wrong in the Dj/dance music culture... the music he plays has been going aorund in circles for the past 10 years... i used to love it but quickly came to my senses that it was shit, emotionless bollox that based it's fanbase on brainwashing teenagers into thinking that DJ superstardom was the best way to appreciate music. i dont mind a bit of trance from time to time but eh...... someone just shoot Tiesto... and Oakie too... he's got a bleedin autobiography coming out
