Hmmmm, just 2 days left until my MBP's warranty ends (sep 13), but I think $360 bucks for the apple care is...too much for me now...I just bought my iphone and I'm saving the $500 for the Apogee Duet. 8O
I'm gonna take the risk...

I bought an ibook G4 from an apple-reseller in spain. It failed after one year and three months and they did not agree to repair it on EU-2-year-warranty laws. They refused to do that, telling me that the 2-year warranty would only cover failures that were fault by the company or due to product-design. A broken motherboard after 15 months of use wouldn't fit into that category.

That sucked.

So I sold that first one to a friend 2 years ago. Her husband went to watch a movie and whipped the screen back (really hard), breaking the powerbook's hinges right off! But it was more than 4 years old at that point so I guessed the applecare was already expired. She said it was like $100-$150 to repair it and how much is apple care? A hundred or two right (if it was within the time frame)?

But I wonder if it was within the applecare period, if they would have covered that type of abuse anyway?
No. THis would have been considered misuse. For that you have to subscribe an insurance program. I got a store here named FNAC that gives you 2 Year Warranty by abiding the law and with 89 Euros more three years insurance on accidental damage until 2000 Euros.
....But I didn't know them when I purchased mine....

Whenever you are tempted to pay for an extended waranty of any sort, put the money in a special bank account instead. If anything goes wrong then you can pay for the repair yourself. If nothing goes wrong then you can treat yourself to a nice holiday or a new piece of gear in a few years time.

Don't forget the famous "bathtub curve" http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Bathtub_curve

Electronic equipment tends to be very reliable. If it's going to fail it's useually in the first few hours ot days or at the end of its usefull life.

Well, you're counting on it to burn out on its own... since they dont cover accidental damage....
