So I hooked up my Roland Xp-80 to a MIDI/USB converter and successfully recorded a track of midi from the keyboard. But when I play it back;
1) The MIDI out indicator in the upper right doesn't blink during play back.
2) The keyboard doesn't play even though it is set to receive (I think)
3) The only way I can hear something is if I assign it one of the "simpler" instruments. Whats with these instruments do they have others that sound like normal midi instruments?
4) Additionally, my MIDI cable has a send/receive light and it doesn't indicate sending anything either.
I have checked the OUTPUT prefs for MIDI and they are set to my USB/MIDI driver.
Help an idiot please...
Bonus Question (T/F): I should be able to map the sliders/knobs on the Roland as a control service for the Ableton software?
MIDI out question
check the manual for 'monitor'
IN - external stuff like your keyboard plays the VST
AUTO - the midi data in the track plays the VST
OFF - off
remote IN is for sliders and stuff
remote OUT sends the data back out when you move a control with the mouse

and then make sure you have two midi cables hooked up between your xp80 and MIDI converter. In-to-Out and Out-to-in.
What is listed on that MIDI track under "MIDI OU TO"?
Does is say somethink like "MIDISPORT 2x2" and "Channel 1"?
Make sure the track in question is trasmitting MIDI to the MIDI converter, and make sure the xp80 and the track are on the same MIDI channel
