My wishlist for new Live features

Post by mindlobster » Mon Sep 16, 2002 2:05 pm

NOTES WINDOW (to share space with the info window), I had a good response when I put that to Ableton a while back and I see others have mentioned it here.
RUDE CLIPS that ignore scene triggering.
MORE COLOURFUL SKINS
MORE PLUGINS
HIDE FEATURE: works like midi and qwerty assignments now...click on the elements of the interface that you don't want to use/see...keep your desktop tidy! Could be good for beginners. Ableton liked this one too...
TEMPO CLIPS that you drop in like audio, and when you trigger a scene containing one, it automatically changes the bpm. These could even be 'event clips' that can contain a number of different parameters in one small chunk..?
ABLETON SPECIFIC HARDWARE INTERFACE. I know I would buy one! (but preferably bus powered not mains powered!)

thats a fantastic list mind-lobster

With regards to skins, It would be great if 'important' things could be very bright, my suggestion was a long loop, should strobe before it repeats, so you know it is repeating.

And brighter little 'playback starting arrows'

I like the rude clips!

The hide feature would be great, sometimes you have no clip selected, so the track view (bottom window) is completely empyt'

Thats an example of when the window could slide down to give more clip space.

Tempo CLIPS, GREAT idea!! especially if you could slowly change into the new tempo (in musicians terms ritardando...)

That could be merged into my 'functions arrows' idea.

My arrows basically allow loops to repeat 4 times etc before moving on to the next scene/ clip.

Or they could be triggerred.

They could be dragged on and off, like clips.

Perhaps this new 'FUNCTION CLIP' could be very powerful

for instance

a) change tempo apon entering, and maybe exiting
b) allow clips/ scenes to repeat x times, be triggered to 'move to the next clip' etc, go to function arrow 'A' etc
c) Maybe we could look at the possibility of adding velocity to the tracks volume with these arrows.

That hardware interface would be cool.

I hope they would stick some spare ports for building our own interfaces, so we could make controllers from almost anything, eg joysticks, electronic drum trigger pads, microphones..

Glad you liked the list, I spend a LOT of time with Live and I think it's more important to simplify/clarify what's there than to add new stuff.

The more I think about it, and from your comments, the more I like the function clip idea! It would be kind of 'semi automation' that you could use on stage to change a lot of things at once, and reset faders/panpots between songs...it seems a lot of people use one Live file to play thru all of their songs (I do). I put a row of empty clips across the screen with info about bpm and other notes inserted as clip names...and I use a lot of colour coding...

I agree a way of expanding a basic hardware interface would be great, even if it's simply by providing a usb port for external controllers. Still waiting for that Midiman Surface thing..!

This all reminds me, I have a suggestion for this site, how about an area where users can post screenshots of their various Live songs/sets, so we can all see how different people use the interface? Could be some surprises?!

i agree mindlobster

simplification is the key.

how can we make make things simpler, and at the same time more powerful and more inuitive

if you guys are anything like me, when you are on stage, you use about half the capacity of live that you thought you would! ie keep it simple.

I think the fact that the Abletons are actual performers gives them the edge.

So many software and hardware devoplers seem to be trying to impress each other with 'features',

Features are just abstractions of what works well, but now they seem to think that they are the actual 'thing'. You know what I mean?

The features of a stradavarious (spelling!) are rather lame on paper

But the whole package, and it's simple great design is great.

Yea Ableton!

I never thought about resetting pan pots, but I can see how that could be useful. Perhaps a 'record what you want to do' feature would be good.

Maybe thats how to simplify things...

Much like apple script for the mac, you press record on the applescript application and do the task you want repeated.

How would this work for most concepts?

Resetting pan pots, easy
Repeat 4 times then stop, easy.. just do that
tempo change...easy just type it in
Go to next scene... a bit tricker, maybe you could make the movement 'relative'

I think I can see how this would work.

Have a mode, like 'Errand/ small task', Key and Midi so that you

1. select the clip you want to use as the example

2. press the 'errant task mode

3. then trigger (example)that loop 4 times, then trigger the next one down.

4. Turn off the 'Errand' mode

Now you have a 'function' or 'Errand' clip, that you can drag on any other clip/slot to tigger four times then move to the next one down

thats pretty simple.

Maybe just a separate little 'Errand recorder'. Becasue I know I would start using it to record stuff like repeating slot triggers, panning etc.

YES!

Bascially it records all the information that the arrange window does, but it applies it to any slot you drag it on.

oh and the photo gallery idea would be good!!

That's great! Maybe we're onto something...hope somebody from Ableton is reading this...Function Clips could also be used to send midi related info like program change or cc's...at the moment I have to do this manually between every song...

I can definitely relate to this. I would absolutely LOVE this feature.
