National Geographic says you are a genius

Post by beats me » Wed Sep 19, 2007 2:35 am

I'm being distracted from writing music by the National Geographic Channel. The topic is about child development and what factors contribute to who we become. Right from the start they are focusing on child music prodigies. The neurosurgeon being interviewed says that playing musical instruments is multitasking to the extreme and it's harder to determine which parts of the brain aren't being used when a musician is playing an instrument when considering a musician who is reading sheet music while playing something like an organ that utilizes all your fingers and feet.

I had to pause the tivo to share this with you. You can now consider yourselves part of the artistic elite and no longer have to hang out with your finger painter friends.

Nothing has been mentioned about looping or slicers, but it isn't over yet.

i think i'm the only musician in my area that has instruments you have to plug into 'them thar sparky-makers on the wall' let alone have one that not made out of roadkill or the leftovers from a hunt.

c'mon dude. you know as well as i do it's all about the music and whether or not you feel it while playing it. not just going through the motions...like aerosmith or trent reznor as of late. besides, how many NON musicians do you know that actually try to tool with Live?

it'd be like a guy with no hands buyin' gloves.

I whole heartedly completely disagree with you.

pick up a REAL instrument like a guitar and play songs for 30 minutes, it demands MUCH more diligence, patience, coordination, concentration, skill and practice than launching scenes.

sorry, but it really cheeses me when someone thinks that launching scenes is the same as playing an instrument. not even close.

omfg like you could learn to play an aerosmith song right off the bat??

'feeling it'...

i'm one of the guys that records some of the loops, programs in others. i admit, i mistook you at first. i thought you were one of those that imply that because they use live, think of themselves as over inflated egos gurus, but are really just posing emo blowhards. which is fine and all if you are, but if you're not...well...you know what i'm sayin.
as for aerosmith, they're like the chili peppers and stp when they were around; they only rocked when they were drunk as kennedy's on march 17th or smacked out like whitney.

I'm coming from a guy who's been playing guitar for 17 years, and I dabble in other instruments. I do not think that article was at all addressing Live users, DJs and the like. it was addressing people who apply themselves to playing an instrument, not people who spend time putting together music like an oil painter would. having taste to piece together a nice track is not the same as playing a real instrument, a real instrument requires constant focus and attention, MUCH higher brain activity than picking out loops and piecing together tasteful music.

sticking feathers up your butt does not make you a chicken.

wtf does your opinion on when a band put put their best music. you have clue what it's like to play an instrument.

sorry, years of practice and paying my dues, this shit gets under my skin.

What? Bock-bock-bock. I am, too, a chicken, asshole. These things tickle.

Seriously, Tone is right. I don't feel like arguing on here, but having played jazz saxophone for 12 years, and that's everything from bari to soprano, adding along the way flute, EWI, then throwing guitar in the mix which I sat in my room and practiced non stop for 3 years before wanting to record my own shit. Spent the next 2 years learning about digital recording and all this software, having Live land in my lap after all that and seeing how it can facilitate the writing process was amazing, but I laugh when I can drop a handful of MP3's in there, slap my lemur to my laptop and jam at my friends party for 4 hours, and people think it's fucking awesome. I giggle.
