[OT] Horror movies that are actually scary

I would certainly agree but the post was initially in reference to "newer" films not being scary like the older ones were. There is no question that the slasher thing has really served to dilute and make repetitive the whole nine. They still make a few good original horror flicks each year but there is just such a current saturation level in the ratio of shit movies to good movies currently.

for christs sake please stop mentioning event horizon.

someone might hear you and before you know it a studio somewhere thinks Paul Anderson [resident evil & alien vs predator to name just two of his celluloid crimes] has a cult following and lets him direct another film.

now thats scares me - just the thought of it i dont even need to see it.

maybe..., but you certainly can't compare EH to those other two hype fests. EH was an excellent Sci Fi flick.

credit where its due EH was a pretty good movie but mortal kombat res evil and AVP [AVP being the nail in coffin for me]

The Exorcist is quite dated and maybe doesn't apply to the original question in the post but still good to mention. It was also great when they released it again years back with deleted scenes. That spider crawl scene is the creepiest thing I have ever seen. I've never been able to look at a staircase in the same way ever since.

On the topic of scary ass stairs scenes, the staircase in The Changling (another great horror movie) was central to the chills in the movie, from the mystery ball bouncing down the stairs to the empty wheelchair appearing at the top of the stairs. Scaaaaary shit. Then of course there is the chick in The Grudge krunking her way down the stairs. There's countless other great scary stairs scenes but those are my top 3.

I've concluded that stairs are just plain scary.

28 days later: zombie movies are never scary because it always looks like you could outWALK the zombies. 28 days later is great because all the dudes who want to chew your throat out are like olympic sprinters.

not necessarily scary, but i thought ravenous was clever and well made, plus a great soundtrack.

okay, since this is a music forum lets talk horror soundtracks...any favorites? i'm starting work on my first soundtrack job, and its heavily john carpenter influenced so lets hear some suggestions.

28 days later, great film. they did a great job of introducing the blood and guts early and imply the rest later on. the human brain comes up with creepier imagery than film can capture. the creepy thing is the second half of the movie where the monsters are uninfected humans, the soldiers. at that point in the movie they introduce real life horrors like gang rape. the imagery of the black infected chained up zombie was powerful, induced the image of slavery to me (doesn't that zombie see the heroes in the film but not go after them in a quick scene?) the DVD has alternate endings.

its not really a zombie movie - it about a virus. there are no walking dead in it.

it good how it plays on human nature. modern classic.

and the soundtrack is awesome. "in the house in a heartbeat" is an way cool track.

havent seen 28 weeks later yet.

Probably not really scary now, but as a kid i remember salams lot, the evil dead and pet semetry terrifying me!

Have to say Blair witch still is quite an unnerving watch...

On a tangenet has anyone seen a BBC docu film from the 80's called threads about what would happen if a nuclear bomb went off in the uk?

truly disturbing if you have the patience to sit through it.
