Old rackmount sound module recommendations please

Roland d 110, i`ve just rediscovered it, it goes for 70/80 euros, 6 output+stereo+ drum output. 6 parts polytimbral + a dedicated drum part with some good sounds.

the sounds are just 80es! love it, and if you start to program you can get some great bass leads pads and percussion too!

Nice, I've had my eyes on that too. Can you fully program the D-110 (or D-550) without a software editor?

(since sounddiver is dead and some software editors for old gear are not available for Mac OSX...)

The Yamaha TG500 Angstrom mentions looks kind of interesting. That's one I never heard of. But maybe it's impossible to program without obsolete software like sounddiver?

Have you heard the Vintage Dreams Soundfont by Ian Wilson? I suspect this is exactly the sort of sounds you are refering to. You can find it at http://www.hammersound.net/hs_soundfonts.html at the bottom of the page. Check it out and let me know if that's what you mean.

Check KVR they let you search specifically by OS and instrument type.

OK, long story but I've been going through some ebay frustrations. Tried to buy a 1080 twice off ebay. Damaged in shipping both times! So I had to return them both to sender.

So now I won an auction for a 2080 so I'm waiting for that. This time, I made sure to find one that had the original box with syrofoam end pieces, so there's no possible debate about it being packed right or not. And I convinced the seller to double box it.

Why do you consider the Fantom an upgrade? Aren't you going to miss the JV's sounds?

Or is it that you're looking for more "modern" sounds?

Hmm...
Roland JV xx80 series
Yamaha Motif rack or Motif ES rack
Triton Rack (Urgh - horrible thing actually, but some like it)
Roland Fantom XR (has sampling too)
New Roland sonic cell - supposed to be good for stock sounds and quite cheap.

Depends how much loot you want to spend.

Personal favourites - Motif ES rack and Fantom XR for different reasons, currently have a Motif ES rack that includes a DX7 synth engine on a plugin card. Thinnking of adding a Fantom XR as well when I can find one cheap.

Maybe they are between the old grungier electronics of the JV1080/2080/3080 and the new sound and fx engine of the Famtom XR, so have neither the slightly characterful grunge of the old machine, nor the pristine sound of the Fantom X engine - especially the COSM fx engine.

Dunno - just a thought - Ive allways found that series a bit bland as well, but fine if your going to use qwith with a good additional multi-fx processor to breath some character and life into it.

Ah, I think you might have a point here about a desirable grunge factor. I hadn't thought about that. Perhaps one person complains about noise and the next likes the punchier grungier sound...and they're both talking about the same thing.

Since I believe XV and JV read the same libraries, that certainly makes the most sense to explain a fascination with the old machines!
