Looking for some old "ethnic" recordings for sample fodder.

Post by condra » Sat Sep 29, 2007 1:07 am

Hi lads.

I'm looking for some ancient recordings for some sample fodder, preferably "ethnic" or religious music.

This site here has an example of what Im looking for:
http://www.oldtelugusongs.com/cgi-bin/s ... pl?group=1

Free, *Legal* mp3s (quality is not an issue) of things like hymms, mantras, national anthems, etc is what I'm looking for, especially those recorded at least 50 years ago.

I had a site up before which had a ton of hymms recorded in the 50s in Eastern Europe but I somehow lost the link.

Google is not much of a help so I'm hoping someone may have something bookmarked, or just have a bit more success with google than I did.

Thanks.

look through any local record bins.. i found a ton of gems at a store i thought was only gonna have crap.. some really good traditional hebrew songs and stuff, and choral stuff from the 50's... turned it into some really sweet hip hop samples.

Good suggestion. I must buy myself a vinyl deck one of these days come to think of it.

I've used some hebrew/jewish stuff in the past too. I really love asian stuff aswell.

Found some great mantras here:

These are modern recordings, certainly free and legal to download, but I doubt they're public domain.

Also found some ancient hindi/bollywood stuff here:
http://www.indianscreen.com/songs.htm
Most is pre-60s so I'm guessing its safe enough to take the odd snippet.

I'm still looking for some Christian/Orthodox hymms. The hunt goes on!

Cheers for the reply.

If you want something legal then there is a sample CD from Big Fish Indian Traditions(watch out, same label has some other CDs that are horrible, useless) which features excellent pro singers, well recorded and tons 3.5G of percussion too many in 44.1/24. Warning, they have no clue about the music so 90% of loops- voice and percussion are wrongly cut, most instruments names are wrong, took me few days to edit but I am from India and studied and performed classical music for 15 years. Hear the tune called Darbari on my-myspace. The voice is from that CD and probably some percussion too. I have some impulses build with the sounds from that CDs since they are better then I could record from my instruments.
I came across that CD accidently and was stunned by the quality, also musical of some loops.
Where are you located? You can get lots of DVD and CDs in Tamil Sri Lankan or Indian;Paki or Afgani groceries in Frankfurt the DVD movie prices went down to 1 Euro. However it will be all illegal
For Russian ortodox look for immigrant community, a zerkiew-Russian church and just record a mess. Russians have statistically highest amount of people with absolute ear and it really shows there, old babushkas(granmas) and all mixed crowd sing so amazingly that it will be unforgetable experience to see/hear . You might talk to the people and record legally, will be better then any EastWest or BigFish canned food..
Word of warning, contemporary Hindi film music is not free to use, Dr.Dre made this mistake of stealing entire song, this lazy ass didnt even cut anything, just put some ugly fat women on top-musically and visually, and featured some hos doing pseudo oriental movements+ inevitable gangsta in oversized jacket. He lost the case and the CD had to be removed from the shops world over.
