Need to record 2x bars of a loop to make loop right

Post by Pasha » Sun Sep 30, 2007 9:08 am

I'm facing a strange thing here.
I got a piano chords variation that I recorded succesfully with MIDI and plays on my external module (I've quantized at 1/16th note) the clip is 10 bars long.
When I record the sound in a clip in session view if I record only the first 10 bars, set length at 10 bars the clip starts with a delay the 2nd time it loops and gets out of sync. However, If I record twice the clip length (20 bars) and start looping from the second half of the take, everything plays right. I can even crop the sample and the loop still plays along with tempo.
This is happenning with 6.0.10. Is this normal?
I've never noticed it before.....Anyone?

In order to hunt down the problem without the same equipment that you have: does the problem exist even with internal instruments like Simpler?

Are you actually referring to recording audio?

Thank god I was to lazy to update from 6.0.7.

Maybe this is a bug...

but what you describe is also consistant with the possibility that you set your sample start/end markers incorrectly inthe first instance, and correctly in the second instance.

Is your grid set to 1/16th note? Are you sure the loop lengths are
10.0.0 and 20.0.0
not
10.0.1 and 20.0.0 ?

And in both cases, the sample start marker is set correctly?

Thanks for help!

My start and end point are correct as you suggested to check. Good to have the idea to eliminate that doubt.
I record audio through a FW interface that in turn has its inputs connected to a mixer that hosts the outputs of my external midi modules.
When MIDI recording I quantize 1/16th note. I can almost say that this happens only with that quantize setting. I have noticed that when freezing a track (let's say a simpler track) Live creates a clip that is twice as long as the original material....

I hope my answers were helpful.....

I'll try with simpler and I'll let you know.

I don't think that has anything to do with your problem. When freezing, Live has to produce a file (not a clip actually) that is twice as long in order to treat tails right, if any: Let's assume you have a synthesizer sound with a long release. If you play an unfreezed clip of that sound in a loop it starts with the attack of the first note. The second pass starts with a mix of the tail from the first pass and the attack of the first note. A freezed track must sound the same, so the resulting audio file has to contain both information: the first 'dry' pass and the following one with the mixed in tail.

Well, that's how "Render As Loop" works...

I never noticed Freeze doing that before.... but I never looked either.
Still, that would surprise me.

What I wouldn't be surprised by:

My song is 20 bars long. I have a 10 bar clip. I freeze the track with that clip, and now I have a 20-bar long audio file.
