What's your CPU usage on your macs..I need comfort!!

Post by city_glow » Tue Oct 02, 2007 8:02 pm

I own a 15" MacBook Pro with 2,4ghz proccessor and 2g memory and when I run live, even if it works fine my CPU usage goes to something around 60% when the songs has like 4 audio and 3 midi tracks running at the same time. I wouldn't care that much if the singer of my band who owns a 13" MacBook with 1.8ghz and 1g memory played the exact same song and it runs around 25% at the same point...
I mean where is the power I'm suppose to have? And maybe it helps if I give the setting I have in Live: The buffer is at 512 samples and the output latency is at 8.69ms while my buddy is also at 512 samples but has a bigger latency (around 18ms). Maybe I shouldn't worry, but it'd be great if someone with knowledge could tell me what all this means. Thanx in advance.

Yep, I have the same problem with a 2.4 core2duo macbook pro 17"
Really bad crackles and pops in even a single VST playing, but if theres 2 it cranks up to 60% cpu and crackles like crazy. If you look here there are a few people experiencing this problem, I suspect it has soemthign to do with an update from Apple as this only just started happening for me really badly about 2 weeks ago.

I got all the last updates from both Mac and Live. Same for my friend with the MacBook. I forgot to say that I got the Edirol Fa-66 audio interface, and that maybe it's just set up the wrong way. I'll report tomorrow as soon as I figure things out.

I don't trust the CPU meter in Live 6.0. I will get CPU spikes of 200% when I'm performing live without any dropouts. WTF that even means is beyond me.

Yes, on an intel macbook.

Ive got a UF4000 sound firewire soundcard in mu CME UF7 keyboard, I have this problem if I use that or my internal sound card in my macbook no matter how high I or low I put the buffer and with or without driver latency compensation.
I think this is a problem with the latest apple update for the macbook pros because I have seen quite a few people experiencing this problem, only on macbook pros and only in the last few weeks since the last system update came out.
I dont know why apple are always messing with this kind of thing with thier updates, there was an update about 4 months ago that created a very similar problem and was resolved in the next update, which realistically is going to be probably when 10.5 comes out this mont (if it comes out when they said it would, which seeing as there has still been no release date announcement I doubt it)

Everything's getting right...

Post by city_glow » Thu Oct 04, 2007 1:56 pm

Wel as promised here's my udpate on my CPU usage and latency issues... I think I just needed to set my audio interface (Edirol FA-66) right. Remember I'm a noob...
So I just selected the Edirol box as the sound input AND output. This way the CPU's relieved of this duty. Not I got no latency (maybe there's a little but I don't feel it while playing guitar), and the CPU meter runs round 20%.
Some people said it had something to do with Apple's updates. I have no idea about that, but this morning I got a new update available (some battery processor update and other stuff). Maybe it's related, maybe not.
Hope everyone will find a way to make that expensive system to work fine!

Greetings from France fellas.
