Daisy chaining MOTU 828 and Ultralite to use with Live

Post by northernlight » Wed Oct 03, 2007 7:50 am

Does this work?

I'm not at home to try this out, maybe one of you is running this configuration.

All the inputs on my 828 are used up, and i'm about to get some new gear. I've got an Ultralite laying around unused, so i wonder if this works with Live.

I haven't tried it personally, but according to my Ultralite's instruction book it should work fine. You'll need to power them separately, not via the Firewire bus power.

thanks.

i too am pretty sure that the two MOTU devices will work.

I'm not sure if Live can handle it.

Ah, gotcha, ok. Won't it depend on your PC's ability to handle Live with all them inputs, rather than Live itself? What's your PC/Mac set up?

MBP should be fine. I guess it's now over to any other folks here who have the same combination... (you could always just give it a go and see)

Yes, please report back and let us know if you can use all the inputs/outputs in Live at the same time.

If not, there's aggregate devices which apparently will do it, but I'm still not sure I understand how that works. I have heard you should be able to get 2 interfaces to work, even though you can only select one in Live's prefs.

It just adds the option to select a new audio I/O source called "Aggregate Device" or whatever you want to call it, with the total I/O of all the devices in it. The I/O numbering will depend on what order you add the soundcards to the Aggregate Device. For example, if you add one soundcard with 2 I/O and then another with 4, it will show as "Aggregate Device (6 ins/6 outs)" where I/O 1 and 2 will be the first soundcard and I/O 4 to 6 will be the 2nd.

Hi

Don't know about 828, but was able to record/play all analogue outs and ins at same time on Ultralite and Traveler daisy chained via firewire and set up as aggregate device in OSX on Powerbook 1.67 with 1Gb... (was able to power both over single bus too, no psu required)

Was a bit of a hog though, well over 50% mark without any fx...

Shame ultralite doesn't have ADAT capability of other MOTUs.... I've heard it would run much faster if you simply routed ADAT outs of say 828 into Traveler (and inverse) rather than daisy chain by firewire...

Cheers
